‘Mad as Hell, and Not Going to Take It Anymore’

Posted by Larry Doyle on July 27th, 2011 12:55 PM |

If this 5-minute video clip does not capture the spirit and rage that is boiling in our nation, I do not know what does.

I thank the regular reader who shared this with me. I commend Jim Garvin for standing up, speaking out, and sharing a healthy dose of ‘sense on cents’ in the process.

If you feel Jim’s pain and share his concerns, as I do, then spread his message. (more…)

Exposing Uncle Sam’s Waste, Fraud, and Corruption

Posted by Larry Doyle on July 21st, 2011 8:33 AM |

With fiscal deficits stretching out as far as the eye can see and politicians focused largely on tomorrow’s polling numbers or their next election, who the hell really minds the store in Washington?

All too often we hear Washington politicians “talk the talk” of rooting out waste, fraud, and corruption, but who and how many of these pols legitimately “walk the walk“?

Where are the real statesmen in Washington who are truly willing to put our nation first rather than looking the other way or playing the game under the guise of politics or ‘that’s just how it works‘.

Really? Our nation is broke. IT AIN’T WORKING!!! (more…)

U.S. Chamber of Commerce Hits FINRA Hard

Posted by Larry Doyle on July 20th, 2011 8:49 AM |

Would your blood start to boil if you felt a hand in your back pocket going for your wallet? Damn right it would.

Then your blood should also boil when the topic of financial regulatory reform comes up. Why?

For the very simple reason that the quality of our financial regulations has an enormous impact on that hand reaching for your wallet.

Do you have confidence that either the crowds on Wall Street or in Washington will truly and effectively protect you from that hand? Not much, right? Me neither. Who will?  (more…)

Reinhart, Rogoff, and Bhide Warn America and World

Posted by Larry Doyle on July 15th, 2011 9:09 AM |

I love reading the work of intelligent economic ‘giants’ who both get it and eloquently share it.

On a daily basis we suffer from the charlatans roaming the halls of Capitol Hill to those occupying the offices of global media moguls.

Some of the individuals in Washington (hello Barack!!) may believe the public does not and can not understand the nuances of major economic issues. In the process, the clowns spew forth volumes of nonsense and bulls&*t which has suffocated the debate needed to restore some measure of integrity to our social fabric.

Let’s turn off  the volume on the nonsense and embrace, elevate, and spread some truth and real wisdom.  (more…)

Can Congress Read? Does It Open Mail Re: FINRA?

Posted by Larry Doyle on June 29th, 2011 1:59 PM |

Do those in Congress know how to read? Do they open their mail?

News is leaking that Congress may be inclined to have Wall Street’s self-regulator, FINRA, gain oversight of the investment advisory industry. That industry is currently regulated by the SEC and operates under a fiduciary standard.

The industry is fighting tooth and nail NOT to be regulated by FINRA which regulates broker-dealers under the less stringent suitability standard.

While the investment advisory industry and FINRA are duking it out, let’s return to my initial questions. Do those in Congress know how to read? Do they open their mail? Why do I ask?  (more…)

What’s Wrong in America? Laurence Meyer ‘Nails It’

Posted by Larry Doyle on June 27th, 2011 10:55 AM |

It is not often that I witness an individual pierce through the smoke and mirrors that disguise our nation’s central problems and state succinctly what Sense on Cents believes so strongly. I had the benefit of capturing the wisdom of just one such individual this morning.

I welcome sharing the wise perspective of one Laurence Meyer, as highlighted in today’s Wall Street Journal,

MEYER

“I think [pessimism about the state of the country] has absolutely nothing to do with the current cyclical state of the economy. It’s not our budget deficit. It’s not China. It’s our education deficit. You can’t be 20th in the world in every field and be a competitive economy.  (more…)

Supreme Court Ruling on Janus Funds “Smells”

Posted by Larry Doyle on June 16th, 2011 9:43 AM |

I firmly believe and have often written that “when private capital is not protected by regulators, legislators, the courts, and the executive branch, then that capital will be more expensive to source in the future. More expensive and subsequently less available capital will inhibit an economic recovery.”

What part of that basic premise do those running Wall Street businesses and our supposed “protectors of the public interest” not understand? Do we need any more evidence than the precipitous decline in volumes across virtually every market segment to highlight that investors “get this” and that the incestuous parties on Wall Street and in Washington “don’t”?

While those with any appreciation of ‘sense on cents’ understand the need to protect long-term investor capital, we witness once again a mind boggling development that relegates the interests of real long term investors—that is you, me, and every Mom and Pop investor in our nation–to second class status. BofA Shareholders, ‘How Long Can You Tread Water?’

Posted by Larry Doyle on June 13th, 2011 9:03 AM |

What did the Lord say to Noah?

The same thing that Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan might now be saying to his shareholders. That is, ‘how long can you tread water?’

Bank of America’s stock is down approximately 25% on the year and close to 35% over the last twelve months. While it has doubled from the Armageddon lows seen in 2008, the stock has fully retraced any moves higher since early 2009.   (The graph of Bank of America below is sourced from Market Watch and covers the last three years).

What gives? Will Bank of America need to raise more capital? Will it need another lifeline from Uncle Sam?

Can’t Shake That ‘Walking Pneumonia’ Economy

Posted by Larry Doyle on June 9th, 2011 7:49 AM |

Have you ever had walking pneumonia? Not a lot of fun, right?

You might be able to operate but your inability to fully inhale is a real drag. I had a bout of walking pneumonia a few years back but was fortunate to get over it in about a month. If only our ‘walking pneumonia’ economy were just that lucky.

I first described our domestic economy as sufferring from this malady in early 2010 when I wrote U.S. Economy = “Walking Pneumonia”.

Going on 15 months later we continue to languish from a variety of factors that inhibit the flow of economic oxygen critical to a real recovery. While many ‘quacks’ would like to have us believe differently, let’s navigate and listen to those who write the checks which drive the oxygen into our system and propel our economic vitality. How so?  (more…)

Rep. Michael Grimm (R-NY) Inducted Into Sense on Cents Hall of Shame

Posted by Larry Doyle on May 24th, 2011 7:17 AM |

Michael Grimm. Do you ever wonder how certain individuals in Washington might be so tone deaf as to miss the din and the roar of the American public screaming for increased transparency in our financial markets? Might these individuals be doing the bidding of the financial industry in return for the payoff of political campaign contributions?

How else could we explain why any individual in our nation today would promote a policy which would stifle the pursuit of badly needed transparency and real integrity in our financial markets? (more…)
