U.S. Economy = “Walking Pneumonia”

Posted by Larry Doyle on March 30th, 2010 12:36 PM |

The other night in my conversation with Richard Davis on No Quarter Radio’s Sense on Cents with Larry Doyle, I defined my outlook for the U.S. economy in 2010 as the equivalent of  ‘walking pneumonia.’  What do I mean? Let’s look at today’s economic releases, Consumer Confidence and Home Prices.

Although pundits may want to promote the rebound in these statistics as a harbinger of economic health, I personally do not think we will see these measures running away from us anytime soon. Have you ever had ‘walking pneumonia?’ I have. You don’t move all that quickly. At times, you wonder what the hell is wrong with you. Welcome to the Uncle Sam economy 2010. (more…)

Tune in to No Quarter Radio’s “Sense on Cents with Larry Doyle”

Posted by Larry Doyle on March 22nd, 2009 9:35 AM |

Please join us this evening from 8-9 p.m. ET for No Quarter Radio’s Sense on Cents with Larry Doyle. With the stock market near 12 year lows, what is driving soc-promo5the flows? What is truly going on in the economy? Where are markets headed? Given the Washington political circus, how will new legislation impact the future of Wall Street? So much to cover.

Additionally, I will talk with Chuck Doyle of Business Capital in San Francisco. Chuck is one of the leading professionals in the field of debt restructuring and recapitalization, and he has been highlighted regularly in major media outlets including The Wall Street Journal and CNN. In the midst of our current economic turmoil, this conversation will be both timely and enlightening.

These are truly historic times in the global economy. Let’s “navigate the economic landscape” without the pandering or nonsense found elsewhere! What is on your mind? What would you like to address? Please share your questions and thoughts by calling in to (347) 677-0792, and also join our live chat room, which I’ll start up about 10 minutes before the show begins!

As a reminder, all NO QUARTER RADIO programming is archived and can be played back at any time. Just go to the NO QUARTER RADIO site and look for previous episodes. In addition, each program is available as a podcast on iTunes.

Could The FDIC Go Broke?

Posted by Larry Doyle on March 5th, 2009 9:45 AM |

In very short order, the FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation) has seen its reserves plummet from $50 billion to $18.9 billion at the end of 2008. At that pace and with the expectation of more bank failures, could this bedrock of our national banking system go broke? Well, FDIC’s Bair Says Insurance Fund Could Be Insolvent This Year.  Is Sheila Bair unnecessarily sounding warning signals? Am I running to the bank to withdraw my money? No and no.

Sheila Bair is proactively managing expectations for all concerned, those being politicians, regulators, bankers, and consumers. In fact, if she did not highlight the current state of the FDIC reserve fund and expectations for future declines, she would not be fulfilling her obligations. (more…)

Why Are Interest Rates Headed Higher?

Posted by Larry Doyle on March 1st, 2009 3:57 PM |

While our domestic stock markets are down approximately 50% over the last 14 months, there has been a rush of cash into short term money market funds, government bond funds, and in the last few months corporate bond funds and municipal bond funds. As I mentioned in my February 2009 Market Review, I am increasingly nervous about bond investments at this juncture. Why? I’m glad you asked.

1. Primarily due to the massive global government funding needs which are just starting to hit the market. In a recent piece, the highly regarded Financial Times projects global government debt issuance to TRIPLE in 2009.

German Prime Minister Angela Merkel is concerned about European countries looking to tap the markets on or near the same dates. She is proposing global coordination of debt issuance so as to insure that rates are not DRIVEN higher. (more…)

The Case for Sense on Cents

Posted by Larry Doyle on February 27th, 2009 10:24 PM |

Welcome to Sense on Cents!!

Why am I so enthused about the potential for this site? I could write at length in answering that question, but in short I firmly believe the “product” delivered here is in very strong demand and very short supply. Collectively as we navigate the economic landscape we will learn, share, and become more comfortable with the economy, the markets, and global finance. While the economy dominates our news currently, where can one go to make sense of it? Welcome to Sense on Cents!

Sense on Cents is truly a reflection of my professional instincts and personal interests.  I sincerely believe this site can elevate the level of financial literacy, economic knowledge, and market insights for those who come here. Additionally, I am pleased to provide a wealth of information on career planning, global perspectives, financial primers, and meaningful literature. The sharing of opinions and active dialogue are strongly encouraged. I hope you feel comfortable coming here, find it to be of great value, will offer your perspectives, and will spread the word! While making “sense on cents,” I feel strongly we will find the relationships and returns to be very rewarding, especially relative to the risks!

I thank Larry Johnson for his tremendous support from my very first day at No Quarter and look forward to a continuing, close working relationship with him, Susan, and all involved at NQ. I sincerely hope and believe our efforts can and will promote our mutual interests.
