Should the Tea Party and Occupy Wall Street try to join forces under the auspices that they have much more in common from a macro standpoint than what may differentiate them from a micro standpoint?
I would love to see these movements join together. I think a merger of these forces could lead to the third party our country so badly needs.
Comments left on my post yesterday, Let’s Merge the Tea Party and Occupy Wall Street, covered a wide scope of thoughts and opinions. I appreciated the range of views and personal experience with OWS shared by readers. I understand that a merged entity would certainly not fit easily into any sort of politically defined group as we have come to expect.
Isn’t that the point? Haven’t we allowed ourselves to be defined by the media and the political establishment? Isn’t it time that those who aspire for an unfiltered access to the truth turn the tables on the power bases in Washington, New York, and elsewhere? (more…)

There is strength in numbers, right? No doubt.
There is also strength in scale, strong organization, defining one’s place in the market and then accentuating all of the above.
Thanks to a loyal reader whose recent comment prompted me to think of how and why a merger of the Tea Party and Occupy Wall Street movements should occur.
Why do mergers work? In my opinion, successful mergers accomplish the following:
1. Define a need and opportunity within the marketplace.
2. Develop a unified vision in joining forces which looks for far reaching and grand common goals.
3. Agree to make the shared sacrifice which marginalizes those inside and outside the individual units which would prefer the status quo or a variation thereof.
4. Realize that prior to winning future battles, nothing can and will be accomplished unless there is an acceptance and agreement on the points above.
Against this backdrop, why do I think those involved in both the Tea Party and Occupy Wall Street movements should merge? (more…)

Say what you want about Newt Gingrich but I would challenge anybody who thinks Newt is not an exceptionally intelligent individual. I am not here promoting Newt’s candidacy for the Republican nomination. I am also not an apologist for Newt’s past personal transgressions.
While I can understand and respect that many people may differ with Newt politically, in this political season I have often witnessed Newt taking on the media and other individuals and groups in a manner consistent with the virtues espoused by Sense on Cents.
I thank the reader who left a comment and a link from last night’s Presidential debate which highlights Newt’s pursuit of transparency. I do welcome promoting this clip and appreciate the aggressive posture Newt takes in the process. The pursuit of truth, transparency, and integrity is never easy when there are enormous forces working in the opposite fashion. On that note, let’s “keep punchin’“,
Having had a number of previous discussions with this reporter, I welcomed her question as to what I thought the OWS movement should look to achieve or demand.
I prefaced my comments by stating that I hope civil unrest and random violence do not come from these demonstrations. America needs a lot of things but we certainly do not need riots. (more…)

Is Wall Street the center of all the problems in America?
Many of those involved in the “Occupy Wall Street’ demonstrations may think so.
I strongly believe that they are wrong.
Those with a keen ‘sense on cents‘ understand that Wall Street does embody part of our national problems. They also appreciate that the stench that overhangs Wall Street is consistent with an incestuous and far stronger odor emanating from Washington. (more…)

BOMBSHELL!!!
Since early 2009 I have written at length about the regulatory capture that has dominated the financial industry. I have defined this concept in layman’s terms as the Wall Street-Washington incest. Today a close friend and regular reader of Sense on Cents shares a story which blows the cover off this incest.
This story is written by Rolling Stone’s Matt Taibbi, perhaps Wall Street’s greatest nemesis. I commend him and those from whom he has sourced this information to have the courage of their conviction and the embodiment of the true American spirit to bring this story to light.
I ardently believe this expose should lead to public Congressional hearings and ultimately a federal judicial inquiry. Might it be the beginning of the end for Mary Schapiro? (more…)

That was not a lot of fun.
The 6% selloff in the market we witnessed today is obviously tremendously unnerving.
Professional traders and active managers who monitor market moves on a minute by minute basis will have their their own opinions as to what did happen and what will happen.
For those in the audience who appreciate and embrace the true spirit of ‘sense on cents’, while we listen to the spin provided by market mavens, esteemed economists, political pundits, and Washington wizards, let us not lose sight of the real fundamental issues which remain at the core of our American foundation. With fiscal deficits stretching out as far as the eye can see and politicians focused largely on tomorrow’s polling numbers or their next election, who the hell really minds the store in Washington?
All too often we hear Washington politicians “talk the talk” of rooting out waste, fraud, and corruption, but who and how many of these pols legitimately “walk the walk“?
Where are the real statesmen in Washington who are truly willing to put our nation first rather than looking the other way or playing the game under the guise of politics or ‘that’s just how it works‘.
Really? Our nation is broke. IT AIN’T WORKING!!! (more…)

Do those in Congress know how to read? Do they open their mail?
News is leaking that Congress may be inclined to have Wall Street’s self-regulator, FINRA, gain oversight of the investment advisory industry. That industry is currently regulated by the SEC and operates under a fiduciary standard.
The industry is fighting tooth and nail NOT to be regulated by FINRA which regulates broker-dealers under the less stringent suitability standard.
While the investment advisory industry and FINRA are duking it out, let’s return to my initial questions. Do those in Congress know how to read? Do they open their mail? Why do I ask? (more…)

They must think we’re stupid.
News that Bank of America is poised to pay an $8.5 billion settlement in a claim by investors that the firm and a predecessor sold packages of loans/securities which did not meet standards and provide proper disclosures is a joke. Regrettably the joke is on us, that is, the citizens of this great land.
$8.5 billion may be a lot of money but what price warrants real justice? (more…)
