Sense on Cents Commends JP Morgan for Standing Up for Long-Term Investors

Posted by Larry Doyle on July 15th, 2010 1:24 PM |

Why are investors increasingly less comfortable putting capital to work in the market? Why are investors increasingly less confident in the very structure of the marketplace itself?  The simple fact is the supposed technological advancements embedded in high frequency trading have come with very real costs for long-term investors. The biggest advocate for investors in addressing these real costs has been Themis Trading’s Joe Saluzzi. I interviewed Joe twice over the last year and have referenced his work often. I commend Joe for often being the lone wolf within the industry crying out on these critically important issues.

Well, Joe now has company in the form of a very, very, very large wolf. Who might that be? None other than JP Morgan. Thanks very much to a regular reader of Sense on Cents for pointing out a story, JP Morgan’s Views On The Five Best Things About the Flash Crash, that ran yesterday at the fabulous site Zero Hedge. Ron Rhoades: “Six Reasons Why FINRA Should Be Dismantled”

Posted by Larry Doyle on July 15th, 2010 11:21 AM |

Regular readers of Sense on Cents are well aware of the multiple issues I have highlighted regarding Wall Street’s self-regulatory organization, FINRA. Allegations of front-running the auction-rate securities market, allegations of investing its own funds in Madoff, misrepresentations (i.e. lying in a proxy statement) in the document used for the very formation of the FINRA organization, and ultimately an incestuous relationship with the industry, I have not been bashful in highlighting what I deem to be critical failings, if not potentially much worse, within this organization.

A good friend of Sense on Cents, Ronnie Sue Ambrosino (who just so happens to be a lead spokesperson for Madoff investors), shared a very interesting commentary regarding FINRA. The writer, Ron Rhoades, offered his thoughts on FINRA yesterday at RIABiz, a website which promotes itself as providing “voice, news, and vision for the advisory (registered investment advisors) community.”

Ron holds nothing back in addressing the question of the fiduciary standard within investment management. (more…)

Rick Davis Explains ‘Double Dip’ Dynamics

Posted by Larry Doyle on July 15th, 2010 7:30 AM |

Are you sitting down?

Rick Davis recently wrote, “Unless the economy begins to pick up quickly, a double dip is likely — with the second round milder but lingering longer than the first.” How can our Sense on Cents Hall of Famer make this projection?

Rick sheds tremendous insights on the credit contraction ongoing and seemingly worsening in our nation’s economy. Davis paints a cogent picture as to how we are within weeks of the 2010 economic slowdown being worse than the 2008 recession at the same point in the cycle. You think I’m exaggerating? Hats off again to the fabulous work done by Rick Davis at Consumer Metrics Institute. Let’s navigate.

July 13, 2010 – Behind the Credit Numbers:

During the past week there has been a flurry of Federal Reserve reports and commentary concerning the levels of credit in the current economy. The two most notable were: (more…)

What Does Rick Davis Think About Yesterday’s ICSC Report?

Posted by Larry Doyle on July 8th, 2010 4:17 PM |

When I see any economic data addressing consumer retail activity, I immediately think of Rick Davis and his fabulous work at Consumer Metrics Institute. On that note, and given yesterday’s strong upward move in the market driven largely by a positively perceived ICSC report, I went straight to the source and asked Rick for his thoughts. I had the following exchange today:

Rick,
Any quick comments or thoughts on the report released by the ICSC? I
know that the report captures same store sales which makes for a big
disqualification and is not properly captured but any thoughts you may
have are always deeply appreciated.
Thanks.

Is Washington Enacting Financial Regulatory Reform or Merely ‘Studying’ It?

Posted by Larry Doyle on July 8th, 2010 1:27 PM |

How often have you experienced a situation in which somebody tries to project an air of leadership while truly dodging an issue? In the course of my career, I have witnessed this reality all too often. When and why does this occur? Typically, managers who are weak and overly political play this card. Washington plays this game all the time. The Obama administration has made an art of forming committees to study issues.

Our ‘so called’ leaders would like to project themselves as real leaders doing the people’s business, meanwhile they are beholden to other constituencies. God forbid they actually take a stand and show their true mettle. So we witness our politicians agreeing to ‘study’ issues, which is more often the equivalent of putting issues on the back burner or letting them die on the vine. Who wins? Lobbyists. Who loses? Average Americans. Who tries to save face? Our political cowards. (more…)

Kenneth Rogoff: “A Lot of Insolvent European Banks”

Posted by Larry Doyle on July 7th, 2010 5:30 AM |

Kenneth Rogoff

Should the European Union run bank stress tests or not? While that question has been hotly debated over the last few months, we received an answer today from one of the most highly respected economists in the world. Who might that be? Harvard’s Kenneth Rogoff, a Thought Leader and Sense on Cents Economic All-Star.

I have often referenced Rogoff’s work over the last eighteen months (go here) and hold him in the highest possible regard. So, about those European banks and the hotly debated stress tests? What does Rogoff think? Are you sitting down?

In a Bloomberg commentary, European Banks’ Hidden Losses Threaten EU Stress Test, we learn: (more…)

Bill Gross Projects The ‘Threshold of Mediocrity’

Posted by Larry Doyle on July 3rd, 2010 7:31 AM |

Pimco’s Bill Gross, a Sense on Cents Economic All-Star, recently released his Investment Outlook for July 2010.  In my opinion, Gross is an outstanding writer with an uncanny ability to communicate effectively on a host of financial, social, and psychological topics from both a macro and micro standpoint. Given those skills along with the fact that he manages the largest bond fund in the world, “sense on cents” dictates that we ponder his words of wisdom.

These words focus on the structural changes at work in the world today, and how investors should brace themselves for returns that are on the ‘threshold of mediocrity.’

Gross writes:

Global financial market returns stand at the threshold of mediocrity. With bonds priced not for recession but near depression, most major global bond indices now yield less than 3%, surely a forerunner of returns to come. (more…)

Rick Davis Nailed 1st Qtr 2010 GDP Report on November 30, 2009

Posted by Larry Doyle on June 30th, 2010 9:41 AM |

How would you like to have the answers to a quarterly report before other participants have even thought that the activity is occurring, data is being compiled, analysis is being rendered, and the results are released? That would truly be awesome, wouldn’t it?

Can you imagine college students knowing the answers to their final exam before other students have even registered for the class? A doctor successfully making the diagnosis, while other doctors are waiting for the patient to arrive at the hospital? How about  a weatherman pinpointing forecasts literally months in advance? Well, in my opinion, the work produced by Rick Davis of Consumer Metrics Institute is the economic equivalent of these seemingly miraculous calls. (more…)

ARS Fight Continues: Another Round with Oppenheimer

Posted by Larry Doyle on June 18th, 2010 11:06 AM |

The fight for justice for auction-rate securities investors has many rounds yet to go. I remain determined to fight, cover this story, and highlight the ongoing fraud and injustice perpetrated on ARS investors everywhere until the last punch has been thrown. On that note, let’s get ready to rumble!

I received a recent message from an individual in Florida. The fact that the financial fraud in this specific case and the ARS market in totality remain largely unknown to the American public is an indictment of Wall Street, the financial industry at large, our financial regulators, the broad financial media, Congress, and ultimately our nation. Let’s strap it back on, and go after those individuals and institutions in our country who have failed to protect our brothers and sisters who were defrauded in the distribution of ARS. Fannie and Freddie Ordered to Delist from NYSE

Posted by Larry Doyle on June 16th, 2010 11:28 AM |

Fannie and Freddie don’t live here anymore.

News just broke that the stocks of our two government stepchildren, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, have been ordered to delist from the NYSE. The Washington Post reports, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac to Delist Shares from NYSE:

The companies’ regulator, the Federal Housing Finance Agency, said Wednesday that it expects Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac shares to trade on the Over-the-Counter Bulletin Board, an electronic quotation service. (more…)
