A healthy does of ‘sense on cents‘ in this 18 minute exchange between Bill Moyers and The New York Times’ Gretchen Morgenson. Call it what you want but from my standpoint capitalism and democracy are being compromised by cronyism and corruption. The evidence is overwhelming.
The health and well being of future generations require that we must continue to call out the crony collusive conspiracy at play in America. Check this out and pass it along.
Navigate accordingly.

Incestuous activity in every fashion is a destructive and corruptible force. Would anybody hoping to be regarded as a serious, credible individual dare say, “Hey, I think incestuous activity is actually pretty good.”
Certainly not, although those engaged in the behaviors may appreciate the benefits that accrue to them without wanting them brought to light.
On that note, the incestuous dynamic that defines the Wall Street-Washington-Regulatory menage-a-trois continues to thrive. You don’t have to take my word for it. Let’s listen to what Simon Johnson, former chief economist of the IMF, professor at MIT Sloan, and a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics has to say on this topic. For those with an interest in learning how our financial regulators fail to perform in upholding both the law and their duty to protect investors, the SEC is “the gift that keeps on giving.”
As if we did not already know that the SEC has all too often failed to protect investors, let’s navigate and learn about the case of current SEC employee Kathleen Furey. From a recent complaint brought by Ms. Furey against the SEC:
The three-year ascent of Kathleen Furey to higher levels of official responsibility and pay came to an abrupt halt in 2008, shortly after she was forced to become a whistleblower. (more…)

A few days ago Columbia University’s Jeff Sachs delivered a diatribe on the crony corruption pervasive in the Wall Street – Washington dynamic to a cadre of elites in attendance at a Philadelphia Federal Reserve symposium.
Well, yesterday Sachs took his message to the masses in the midst of an exchange on MSNBC’s Morning Joe.
Selected other liberal contributors to this exchange seemed to me to be almost embarrassed by the beating Sachs put on the “bought and paid for” crowd atop Capitol Hill and others residing and working at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
Grab a second cup of coffee and watch this clip from the 3:30 mark. It will only take you 8 minutes and it is well worth it. (more…)

If anybody were to think that the fight for decency and justice in our markets, our nation’s capital, and throughout our land were to have run its course . . . well think again.
In a volley of invectives not often seen in the genteel world of liberal academia, Columbia University professor Jeffrey Sachs recently threw a string of verbal haymakers that would have made the noted NHL hitman Chris “Knuckles” Nilan proud.
Sachs was named one of the world’s 100 Most Influential people by Time magazine in 2004. His professional body of work speaks for itself. At a symposium held recently at the Philadelphia Federal Reserve, Sachs dropped the gloves and unleashed the following:
“What has been revealed, in my view, is prima facie criminal behavior,” he said. (more…)

What are the most important issues you face?
I imagine most would think that physical, mental, and emotional well being would rank highest on your list.
Imagine, then, the individuals to whom you went for independent and objective advice on these very personal issues were to inform you that their insights were, in fact, highly conflicted and that their proclamations and prescriptions were actually little more than “puff.” You would probably be more than a little pissed off.
What about your financial well being? (more…)

If transparency is the great disinfectant, then the stench emanating from Washington not only remains strong but just got a whole lot stronger. How so?
Recall that the STOCK Act, that is the legislation passed a year ago to outlaw insider trading in Washington, only came into being after a 60 Minutes expose embarrassed Congress to address this racket. Prior to that the legislation sat bottled up in committee for many years.
Well, if you had any real confidence that the STOCK Act would really clean out the insider trading stables in Washington, think again. With both old holes and recent new holes in this smelly piece of legislation, this act should be renamed the Molded Swiss Cheese Act. Thanks to the regular reader who brought this stench to my attention. Let’s navigate. (more…)

Not that we needed any further evidence that the inmates on Wall Street are running the asylum in Washington or that our nation is seriously eroding from within, but recent testimony regarding the settlement of the mortgage foreclosure debacle provides it.
You recall the shenanigans within this foreclosure fiasco where the banks often employed individuals for $10/hour to robo-sign documents and illegally foreclose on people’s homes, don’t you? I defined this specific practice and much of what it encompassed as part and parcel of an enterprise that could only be described as racketeering. Well, there’s more. (more…)

In December 2011, President Obama was interviewed on 60 Minutes and had the following exchange with CBS’ Steve Kroft in regard to behaviors on Wall Street:
KROFT: One of the things that surprised me the most about this poll is that 42%, when asked who your policies favor the most, 42% said Wall Street. Only 35% said average Americans.
My suspicion is some of that may have to do with the fact that there’s not been any prosecutions, criminal prosecutions, of people on Wall Street.
And that the civil charges that have been brought have often resulted in what many people think have been slap on the wrists, fines. “Cost of doing business,” I think you called it in the Kansas speech. Are you disappointed by that? (more…)

Last summer I tagged Wall Street’s industry funded police at FINRA as being little more than meter maids. With a recent review of FINRA’s largest fine imposed in its history, I now realize that I have actually done a serious disservice to those diligent and hard working meter maids patrolling our cities and towns. How so?
Let’s navigate and look more deeply into FINRA’s $12 million fine imposed on those paragons of virtue who ran Union Bank of Switzerland’s equity operations.
What did UBS do to deserve FINRA’s “largest” fine? (more…)
