Connecting the Dots: The US Attorney, the SEC, Art Samberg, Pequot Capital, Hush Money, Lying, and More

Posted by Larry Doyle on December 27th, 2010 12:22 PM |

This commentary and attached story are a little lengthy but very important. I hope you will take the time to read, review, and share. LD

Is it possible that our nation can experience a historic demise in our economy and markets with little if any criminal activity involved in that process? Was our economic and market meltdown largely ‘a perfect storm’?

I do not buy those who would put forth that line of reasoning. Nor do I think should you.

Does it defy logic to think that our nation has been hit with trillions of dollars in losses and untold economic pain but only a relative handful of individuals were involved in criminal behaviors connected to this turmoil? Yes, that does defy logic.

Where are the criminal prosecutions? (more…)

Lessons Learned Growing up in Boston, MA

Posted by Larry Doyle on December 1st, 2010 10:21 AM |

Boston SkylineI loved growing up in Boston. My beloved knows how often I think back to the lessons learned and ‘education’ received in those formative years of the 1960s and early ’70s.

While growing up as a youth in Boston, my friends and I experienced plenty of situations that shaped our characters and our outlook. I know for a fact that my youthful experiences also had a profound impact on shaping my instincts.

What did I learn growing up in Boston? What did I learn riding those city buses and trolley cars? What were the lessons learned at Hynes, Fallon, and Billings Fields? What will I never forget when my friends and I ‘hustled’ our way into sports venues (gaining entry to the Boston “Gaahden” via the fire exits, sneaking into Boston College football games amidst the college band)? Is Ferdinand Pecora Rolling Over in His Grave?

Posted by Larry Doyle on November 19th, 2010 6:57 AM |

Where are our statesmen?

Where are the individuals who would choose to sacrifice personal gain for our national welfare? I am not talking about mere public policy implementation. I am talking about those who would choose to pursue and embrace the truth while exposing the incestuous Wall Street-Washington relationship that has brought our nation to its knees.

Where is today’s Ferdinand Pecora when we need him? I shudder to think that the great Pecora, who led the investigation of Wall Street practices which brought on the Great Depression, might be rolling over in his grave right now. Why’s that? (more…)

What’s Driving Today’s Vote?

Posted by Larry Doyle on November 2nd, 2010 9:08 AM |

Will there soon be a run on U-Hauls in Washington DC?

Later this evening we will learn just how many incumbents in Washington are sent packing. In the process, we will assuredly hear from political pundits on both sides of the aisle as to what Americans are saying with their vote. In my opinion, we can dismiss the pundits and the politicians alike. While we are at it, we can throw a heap of cold water over the media as well. How so? Why’s this?

The simple fact is the rage coiling within the American populace has been developing for well over a year and today that rage will be released. The force multiplier of that rage will send a message to Washington and every corner of our great nation that Americans are beyond fed up with politics as usual and the crony capitalism that has flourished within that system. This rage is far different than anything I have ever witnessed in my lifetime. I highlighted it a year ago. While the reality of the rage was clearly evident in late 2009, our political representatives from both sides of the aisle did little to nothing to address it. Today they will pay the price for their lack of attention to the American public.

Let’s take a quick look back to the pulse of our nation in November 2009. Has that pulse remained the same? (more…)

What Will the Fed Do When QE2 Fails to Stimulate Economy?

Posted by Larry Doyle on October 29th, 2010 5:56 AM |

Here we are a full three years into our economic malaise, Uncle Sam has thrown everything and the kitchen sink at the economy yet we have little to no traction in terms of growth and momentum. Will another trillion dollars of liquidity do the trick? Well, while the Fed’s liquidity may move markets, will it move the economy? Don’t bet on it. The Fed and its brethren on Wall Street and in Washington are reluctant to truly level with the American people. How so?

Our nation is experiencing a serious structural change in our economy — not a mere ‘enormous downturn’ in the midst of the business cycle. If our central bankers and government officials were to emphasize this point, it may cause a sharper retrenchment in our current growth but it would likely lead to a quicker rebound. Before we get into why our bankers and their political cronies are reluctant to make this acknowledgement, let’s take the pulse of an array of venture capitalists, money managers, and others who provide the capital to a wide array of companies. What do these individuals think the economic impact of another round of quantitative easing might be? (more…)

Darrel Issa Introduces Legislation to Restore FOIA at the SEC

Posted by Larry Doyle on September 18th, 2010 12:14 PM |

LD’s edit: Thank you to a Sense on Cents reader, Transparency, for informing us that Senate Judiciary Committee Approves Bill To Repeal SEC FOIA Exemptions.

Thanks to a loyal reader of Sense on Cents for sharing this press release put forth earlier this week. Not that the Republican Party does not have a LOT to answer for in terms of the final Financial Regulatory Reform, but at least on this front, I commend Darrell Issa (R-CA) for introducing this legislation.

Issa Introduces the SEC Freedom of Information Restoration Act

President Obama at Signing of Financial Reform Bill:  “It demands accountability and responsibility from everyone…It demands accountability and responsibility from everyone…And we all win when folks are rewarded based on how well they perform, not how well they evade accountability.” (more…)

POGO’s Angela Canterbury “Cross Examines” in re: SEC’s FOIA Exemptions

Posted by Larry Doyle on September 18th, 2010 11:33 AM |

Saturday morning in America and life is good.

Yesterday, I gave major props to our great American Gary Aguirre for addressing critically important issues embedded in the recently enacted Financial Regulatory Reform package which allows further FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) exemptions by the SEC. (Aguirre wrote a fabulous dissertation in the September Wall Street Lawyer, which I embedded in my commentary.) I qualified yesterday’s commentary, Great American Gary Aguirre “Cross Examines” in re: SEC’s FOIA Exemptions, as perhaps the most important and enlightening ever put forth at Sense on Cents. I truly believe that. Gary Aguirre is a great American.

He has company. (more…)

Great American Gary Aguirre “Cross Examines” in re: SEC’s FOIA Exemption

Posted by Larry Doyle on September 17th, 2010 8:03 AM |

I truly believe this could be the single most important and enlightening commentary ever put forth at Sense on Cents. Although it is a little lengthy and has some legalese, if you care about truth, transparency, and integrity in our nation, take the time to read and review. You will be better for it. I encourage you to share it with friends and colleagues.

Washington still does not get it.

I strongly believe the deeply embedded Wall Street-Washington incestuous relationship was central to the erosion of our economic foundation. While that incest must be extirpated if we are to regain our economic standing, we continue to suffer through “show trials” dealing with the critically important topic of pursuing transparency across our political and financial landscape. Regrettably, the media in general provides limited coverage to this ongoing pursuit. To that end, I welcome banging this drum and engaging those in our nation who will ask the hard questions and put forth aggressive propositions so real transparency can be achieved. Even if the pursuit comes up short, the effort and goals are beyond worthy. Let’s navigate.

Yesterday, the House Financial Services Committee chaired by Barney Frank held a hearing to address the SEC’s exemptions from Freedom of Information requests embedded in the Financial Regulatory Reform legislation. Congressman Frank rolled out the red carpet to SEC Chair Mary Schapiro. From the testimony, Frank offers: (more…)

Fox Business Highlights Need for SEC Transparency

Posted by Larry Doyle on July 29th, 2010 12:33 PM |

Kudos to Fox Business News for leading the charge within the financial media on the need for real transparency at the SEC. FBN’s Adam Schapiro was just on chatting with Stuart Varney on this very important topic. Listen to Adam, and ponder his comments in light of the Madoff and Stanford travesties that took place literally right under the nose of the SEC. (Clicking on the image will bring you to the Fox Business News website, and the video clip will begin to play automatically.)

Transparency at the SEC? Why Would They Want to Do That?

Posted by Larry Doyle on July 29th, 2010 7:10 AM |

Is the SEC’s Inspector General David Kotz looking for a new job? How about SEC Head Mary Schapiro? Is she also looking for a new job?

Why do I ask? Is America aware that the new Financial Regulatory Reform bill, recently passed by Congress and signed into law by President Obama, will effectively close the doors and shut the blinds at the SEC in terms of people being allowed to gain access to information? Why and how do situations like this happen? Let’s navigate.

Fox News highlighted this travesty yesterday in writing, SEC Says New Financial Regulation Law Exempts It from Public Disclosure:

So much for transparency. (more…)
