James Koutoulas: JP Morgan Insult Added to MF Global Injury

Posted by Larry Doyle on March 12th, 2012 8:24 AM |

Going on five full months and with MF Global customers still waiting for a glimmer of justice on the horizon—and the return of THEIR money—we awake to read that CME executives believe no further regulation could have prevented the debacle that is MF Global.

Why is that?

Most rational and ordinary Americans already sense those running the show at MF Global ‘broke the rules’. CME executives now seemingly maintain as much as well.

Let’s give these CME execs a gold star for a tremendous grasp of the obvious. Let’s also quickly review The Wall Street Journal story and then a further fascinating story highlighting what happened to somebody in the arena who spoke out on this debacle.  Read the rest »

Weekend Entertainment

With credit to NRG, I submit the following comical exchange regarding our unemployment situation.

Unemployment Definition – Abbott and Costello

U.S. Unemployment Up in February | Underemployment is 19.1%, up from 18.7% in January

PRINCETON, NJ — U.S. unemployment, as measured by Gallup without seasonal adjustment, increased to 9.1% in February from 8.6% in January and 8.5% in December.

COSTELLO: I want to talk about the unemployment rate in America .
ABBOTT: Good Subject. Terrible times. It’s 9%.

COSTELLO: That many people are out of work?
ABBOTT: No, that’s 16%. Read the rest »

Trading Volumes Plummet, “Choose Not To Play”

Posted by Larry Doyle on March 9th, 2012 8:58 AM |

“The problem here is, when the public becomes aware of the nature of the game, they may choose not to play. This is the problem not only for Goldman but for Wall Street as a whole if people choose not to play.”

I made that statement in the midst of an interview two years ago with CNBC’s Mark Haines (may he rest in eternal peace) about Goldman Sachs. (For those interested you can access that interview here. My comments about Goldman specifically and this topic begin around the 3 minute mark.)

What have trading volumes done on the NYSE over the last two years?  Read the rest »

Please Sign Petition re: Peter Sivere – George Demos

Posted by Larry Doyle on March 8th, 2012 10:10 AM |

Aside from my hope that readers would care enough to share my writing and passion for the Sense on Cents virtues of truth, transparency, and integrity I do not believe I ask for much if anything from those who come here.

Well, today I am asking.

How might you help?

More than you may ever fully know or appreciate.  Read the rest »

Jon Corzine Meet Dean Tofteland

Posted by Larry Doyle on March 8th, 2012 6:27 AM |

“What they call ‘unlawful commingling’ on Wall Street is called ‘stealing’ back on Main Street.”

A week ago, I welcomed highlighting the plight of an elderly couple ensnared in the morass that is the MF Global debacle. Helen Metchikoff’s plea tugged at my heart as she wrote:

i am a 75 yr old grandmother my husband is 76 we take care of a brain injured 55 yr old son all of our investment money we saved in our lifetimes was invested in mf global for a monthly income to live out our lives now we are broke living on a pittance social security checks this is such a crime against all the people who lost through the greed of corzine and all the rest of his cronies isn’t there anything that can be done to help us we are suffering and i don’t think we deserve this they should all be punished severely for this just like madoff is…

There are clearly many, many more individuals and couples also suffering as a result of the “commingling” that transpired at MF Global. Yesterday, I read of just such another individual.

Duke University/CFO Survey: Cautiously Optimistic Recommended

Posted by Larry Doyle on March 7th, 2012 1:07 PM |

Hot off the press, I just received the Duke University/CFO Magazine Global Business Outlook Survey. The survey highlights reasons for real optimism domestically but with ongoing concerns and risks as well. Let’s dispense with the formalities and dive right in to the voluminous amount of detail within this cutting edge and timely release.

Where else are you getting this sort of real time insight?

Let’s navigate.

DURHAM, N.C. — Optimism among U.S. and Asian chief financial officers jumped this quarter and the hiring outlook is strong for 2012. European CFOs also say 2012 will be an improvement over a difficult 2011. >>>>>>>> Read the rest »

ARS Update: STILL Hostage in the ARS Roach Motel

Posted by Larry Doyle on March 6th, 2012 4:38 PM |

Wall Street may think it is back to business as usual, but what about those investors and our fellow American citizens who were left behind and forgotten as a result of the crisis from 2008? Of whom do I speak?

The tens of thousands of our fellow citizens who remain hostage in the ARS Roach Motels.

Who are the managers of seemingly the most grotesque ARS Roach Motels? Oppenheimer Holdings and Pimco. How do we know?  Read the rest »

The Eerie Silence Surrounding Wall Street Price Fixing

Posted by Larry Doyle on March 6th, 2012 8:48 AM |

Shhhhhhhh………

What is that eerie silence emanating from Wall Street lately? No, it’s not the quiet on the floors of the equity exchanges in the midst of anemic trading volumes. It is also not the empty echoes emanating from trading desks once bursting with activity.

The eerie silence to which I allude goes to the price fixing at the very core of how our Wall Street banks fund themselves in the overnight market. Sounds ominous, no? Let’s navigate and enter the world of Libor based funding. What is Libor? ……………….. Read the rest »

Support H.R. 757 for Real Investor Protection

Posted by Larry Doyle on March 5th, 2012 8:47 AM |

All too often I have heard over the last few years from investors violated by the Wall Street-Washington incestuous process and feeling totally disenfranchised as a result. Why have investors gotten trampled?

Great question and worthy of widespread debate and discussion. In an attempt to narrow our focus today, let’s zero in on the Securities Investor Protection Corporation, the organization designed to:

restoring funds to investors with assets in the hands of bankrupt and otherwise financially troubled brokerage firms. The Securities Investor Protection Corporation was not chartered by Congress to combat fraud.

From where does SIPC raise its funds in order to offer this protection to investors?  Read the rest »

Mission Kilimanjaro Recommended

Posted by Larry Doyle on March 3rd, 2012 10:07 PM |

It’s the weekend, so let’s take a breather from our normal navigation of the economic landscape.

Not that the twists and turns on our economic landscape are not challenging enough but let’s navigate a much steeper slope. How about if we ‘join’ a very special mission and climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Really?

Yes, really. Please stick with me on this. You will not be disappointed. In fact, you will be amazed.

A close friend of mine recently returned from ascending the highest peak in Africa with a group known as Mission Kilimanjaro. What made this undertaking so special, and why should you read this story and view the embedded video at the end of my commentary?   Read the rest »
