Do you plan on watching President Obama’s State of the Union address this evening?

Why do I think I hear many people who might read this blog say, “Why would I want to do that?”

In the midst of leaving an event last evening in New York City, a very informed pollster told me that the overwhelming sense in the nation today is that people are totally fed up with Washington and Wall Street. No surprise there, but why is that? Well, because all too often our politicians from both sides of the aisle over-promise and then under-deliver.

As an example of just that practice, I commend Dennis Kelleher, President of Better Markets, for releasing the following statement regarding the Obama administration’s promise he made two years ago in his State of the Union to bring real accountability to Wall Street.     (more…)

Obama Acknowledges Congressional Insider Trading

I will readily admit that I find President Obama to often be disingenuous in much of what he is delivering in his State of the Union.

He plays to an American public which remains severely challenged when it comes to financial literacy.

When he speaks about taxes, would he care to lay out why there is a difference between tax rates on long term capital gains versus ordinary income?

Does he know the difference and why the long term capital gains rate is lower?  (more…)

What Happened to Focus on Jobs?

If America and Americans are not at work, then how can we truly expect any other initiatives and undertakings to gain a foothold? There is nothing that generates more personal and collective confidence than a job. In fact, I would go even further and state that a job not only generates personal confidence for individuals, but ultimately a job very often defines a person’s self-worth.

Then why is it that the topic of jobs is not the OVERWHELMING focus in Washington eight days a week? While President Obama elevated the focus on job growth in his State of the Union speech, the topic seems to receive front page coverage only on the first Friday of the month when unemployment statistics are released.
