The lessons which went unheeded from the economic calamities and accompanying market meltdowns of the 1980s and 1990s laid the foundation for the Ponzi-style financings underwritten within our sub-prime mortgage market and the European Union of this past decade.
How have political leaders at home and abroad addressed the enormity of our collective indebtedness? They merely continue to kick the can down the road so that our global economic landscape can only be compared to a ‘slow-motion train wreck’. Read the rest »

America wakes up this morning hopeful for a new year filled with peace and prosperity. Sense on Cents welcomes spreading our spirit of optimism.
Before we move forward, though, let’s take an accounting of 2011 and induct those most deserving into our Sense on Cents’ 2011 Halls of Fame and Shame.
Prior to our induction ceremony today, I am sure there are many in the crowd who may want to review our past award winners. On that note, I humbly submit:
From the above Fame and Shame lists, I believe the top three in each Hall deserve special recognition. On that note, the medals go to the following:Read the rest »

I am passionate about a number of things, including integrity, accountability, discipline, fairness, and opportunity.
I am not bashful in calling out those people whom I believe willingly and wantonly flout these virtues.
I also welcome heaping praise on those who not only embrace these virtues but then also go about doing something to promote them.
I typically immediately place these real American heroes into the Sense on Cents Hall of Fame. On that note and on this the final day of 2011, I welcome inducting Mr. Jalen Rose into our hallowed hall of heroes. Read the rest »

As we get ready to usher out 2011 and embark on a new year and a Presidential primary season leading to the general election in November 2012, I would like to rerun one of my personal favorite Sense on Cents commentaries written here this past February.
The simple fact remains, our nation will never regain its standing in the world unless and until we stop lying to ourselves. On that note, I humbly repeat, America Needs to Stop The Lies and The Liars,
Real long term success and greatness are founded upon the principles that people do not lie, cheat, or steal. Our nation is neither succeeding nor is great at this point in time because we have allowed these vices to grow and spread throughout our society. Shame on us.
Our nation does have the potential to be a fabulous nation again; however, let’s stop kidding ourselves in thinking that we are a great nation currently. How is it that America has lost its greatness? Where are the aforementioned vices on display? Read the rest »

We often hear that those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Does anybody in the audience contest those words of wisdom?
Why do you think I hear from many former colleagues and other Wall Street insiders that we are very likely going to experience another economic crisis—or perhaps merely a prolonging of our current crisis—and accompanying significant market decline?
My ‘sense on cents’ indicates to me that we will have more economic and market turmoil for the very simple reason that our financial titans, our political leaders, and our nation as a whole have not embraced nor learned from the lessons of the past. Read the rest »

Many of our expert analysts in Washington, on Wall Street, and throughout our land are consumed in a debate about the finer principles of Keynsian vs Classical economics.
Our economic and political wonks can debate all they want because ultimately the debate regarding our nation’s economic health is a function of basic math.
Let’s take a quick look at Rick Santelli’s class on ‘sense on cents’. I think everybody who sits in on this 2 minute tutorial can fully understand that the math being utilized in our nation’s capital —and many state capitols as well—possesses few of the basic principles of ‘sense on cents’ and is actually more a game of charades than anything else. To those who celebrate the birth of Christ and the blessings He brought to the world may you enjoy this day in all its glory. To those who celebrate Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or another traditional form of worship may this season also bring you peace and happiness.
As we come together to enjoy the company of family and friends and to look forward to hopefully better days in 2012 I encourage you to look back and view our current state through the perspective of a story I first read and shared three years ago.
This story made such an impression on me that I am compelled to continue to spread its message of love, determination, strength, and courage.
It’s easy to complain in the midst of a stressful holiday season. But my family has a unique remedy: We remember one special Christmas in 1919 that gave us the freedom and liberty we enjoy today. This will be the 89th anniversary of the year my father celebrated Christmas Eve deep in the snow-laden woods of Russia as he fled the Communist takeover of his homeland.

The pace of financial and economic news continues at breakneck speed.
We see breaking stories of massive fines for discriminatory lending practices, continued financial flailing within the Euro-zone, and ongoing obfuscation of the truth on Wall Street and in Washington.
Three plus years and counting and we continue to encounter the burdens and stress of our steep climb along our economic landscape.
Three plus years and counting I am truly grateful to all those who have welcomed me into their lives via my writing and work here at Sense on Cents.
On that note, while our financial and economic issues are not going away anytime soon, I hope that at this time and throughout the year we can gain a fuller appreciation and direct our focus to the most important aspects of life.
I cherish my faith. I love my family. I am grateful for so many truly great friends.
I hope that everybody who reads this can stop for just a moment and focus on those within their lives whom have really made a difference and thank them. That gratitude is the spirit of the season and the gift that keeps on giving!!
I firmly believe that a focus on faith, family, and friends are not merely appropriate during this season but are critically important for our nation as a whole as we try to restore the values upon which our nation was built.
These values for me are the true meaning of the season and the essence of Sense on Cents.
However you may celebrate, I wish you all the best today, tomorrow, throughout the holiday season, and every day thereafter.
I thank you again for your support. I want to especially thank those who are serving our nation and will not have the opportunity to be with loved ones during the holidays. I salute you!!
I hope you will take a minute to enjoy this video Christmas card put forth by my Alma Mater, Holy Cross.
Do your friends, family, and colleagues a favor and get them to do the same. Thanks!!
I have no affiliation or business interest with any entity referenced in this commentary. The opinions expressed are my own. I am a proponent of real transparency within our markets, our economy, and our political realm so that meaningful investor confidence and investor protection can be achieved.

What do we think of the SEC’s attempt to pursue former Freddie and Fannie CEOs Richard Syron and Daniel Mudd?
Is this a fully legitimate pursuit of justice against these executives? Could there be more than a whiff of political motivation on the part of the current administration buried in this pursuit?
On Friday, S.E.C. officials trumpeted their actions in the Fannie and Freddie case as part of a renewed effort to crack down on wrongdoing at the highest levels of Wall Street and corporate America……….. Read the rest »
