Sense on Cents Endorses POGO

Posted by Larry Doyle on January 28, 2010 3:14 PM |

In the never ending pursuit for truth, transparency, and integrity on our economic landscape, I am constantly looking for people, institutions, and enterprises which embrace and endorse those same principles. I hope and believe that readers of Sense on Cents appreciate that fact. Please do not be bashful to tell me when I fall short.

In checking on developments relating to the story I wrote the other day, “The SEC Pimped Peter Sivere”, I crossed paths this morning with an institution that has been around for thirty years but of which I was not acquainted. I am referring to the Project on Government Oversight (POGO).

Who is POGO?

The Project On Government Oversight (POGO) is an independent nonprofit that investigates and exposes corruption and other misconduct in order to achieve a more effective, accountable, open, and ethical federal government. Founded in 1981, POGO (which was then known as Project on Military Procurement) originally worked to expose outrageously overpriced military spending on items such as a $7,600 coffee maker and a $436 hammer. In 1990, after many successes reforming military spending, including a Pentagon spending freeze at the height of the Cold War, POGO decided to expand its mandate and investigate waste, fraud, and abuse throughout the federal government.

POGO is a multi-issue organization with an expertise in working with inside sources and whistleblowers to expose evidence of waste, fraud, or abuse in the federal government.  In recent years, POGO’s investigations and outreach programs have addressed shortcomings in national security, the lack of oversight of government spending, outmoded nuclear weapons programs, inadequate whistleblower protections, excessive government secrecy, and Congress’ inability to conduct effective government oversight. POGO’s investigations have also been responsible for billions in saved tax dollars and for major policy reforms affecting millions of Americans.

Throughout its history, POGO’s work has been applauded by Members of Congress from both sides of the aisle, federal workers and whistleblowers, other nonprofits, and the media.

Sense on Cents has a broad based focus across our entire economic landscape. I am thrilled that I have found POGO. I strongly endorse their work and I welcome the site here at Sense on Cents.

To that end, I have created a new category of links (in the right sidebar) entitled WATCHDOGS. The link to POGO can be found there. I will be checking it often and encourage readers to do so, as well.
