Vote for Best Financial Blog of 2012
Posted by Larry Doyle on October 12th, 2012 7:00 AM |
Thanks to our friends at eWallstreeter for making the effort to organize and run a poll for the best financial blog of 2012.
Is there any doubt that the blogosphere has changed the manner in which news and opinion in our nation are disseminated? So many bloggers, both financial and otherwise, produce fabulous work and evoke the true American spirit in the process. I tip my hat to bloggers everywhere for engaging in debate in the public square. In fact, I would go so far as to say that given the current positioning of the mainstream media, the case for exceptional bloggers has never been greater.
I thank those who have already voiced their support and have cast their vote for my work here at Sense on Cents. I hope others who visit my blog share that sentiment. You can rest assured my passion in pursuit of truth, transparency, and integrity while navigating the economic landscape has never been stronger. I thank you, the readers, for your own passion which fuels so much of what transpires here.
On that note, I hope you will take a minute or so to vote for the Best Financial Blog of 2012.

Libor Scandal: Will Wall Street Run Out The Clock?
Posted by Larry Doyle on September 20th, 2012 9:08 AM |
Dean Smith was a master practitioner as basketball coach at the University of North Carolina.
While many fans of the game may not have appreciated the style of ball played by Coach Smith, he was focused on one thing. Winning. What was Coach Smith’s signature style offensive strategy toward the end of games? The four corners.
College basketball during a large part of Coach Smith’s tenure operated without a shot clock so the team in possession of the ball often would spread the floor and run the clock down during the final stages of the game. The North Carolina Tar Heels under Coach Smith ran this “keepaway” style to perfection.
We see a very similar version of this offensive “running the clock out” currently on Wall Street. How so? Let’s navigate and address current developments in what I view as the largest financial scandal in history, that is the Libor scandal. (more…)
Libor Scandal: UBS Plays the “Most Dangerous Game”
Posted by Larry Doyle on August 9th, 2012 9:00 AM |
“You want loyalty? Get a dog.”
Wall Street management was notorious for playing the loyalty card with employees when they were preparing to screw them during bonus season. I am going to guess that those loyalty conversations do not carry much weight anymore. Certainly not at UBS.
In what I would define as the financial equivalent of the classic story, “The Most Dangerous Game“, the intrigue currently within the offices at Union Bank of Switzerland redefines the Wall Street employer-employee relationship. Let’s navigate into this unknown and uncharted territory. (more…)

Breaking Up the Banks? . . . Just a Start
Posted by Larry Doyle on July 26th, 2012 6:50 AM |
The news yesterday that once renowned banker Sandy Weill has called for the breakup of the now “too big to fail” banks is treated as some sort of earth shattering news development. News? Really? “Sandy, where ya’ been, my man?”
In the neighborhood of my youth, news of that sort was typically used to wrap the daily catch down at the local pier.
While those on the airwaves may care to direct a measure of respect to Mr. Weill, the call to break up the “too big to fail” banks is little more than yesterday’s news. Who made this call early on? (more…)
Sense on Cents Request: Your “Solutions for America”
Posted by Larry Doyle on July 17th, 2012 7:49 AM |
A few days ago I received a comment from a regular reader which really resonated with me. In response to my commentary recommending that people be required to complete high school or the equivalent as a prerequisite to receiving any form or substance of government assistance, this reader wrote,
“It’s about time you came up with an issue that is fixable…”
Despite the fact that I fervently believe all the issues I broach are fixable if the requisite transparency is applied and the subsequent truth is embraced, I understood the reader’s point and he got me thinking.
Does anybody doubt that our politicians are all too often engaged in chasing their tail and looking for campaign funds? While those in Washington talk to themselves and their cronies, let’s direct our own focus and generate what I would deem as “Solutions for America.” Your assistance and support in this exercise and effort is requested and appreciated. Jon Corzine and MF Global: “The System Failed Us”
Posted by Larry Doyle on May 23rd, 2012 6:08 AM |
Almost eight months and still the customers of MF Global both here in America and overseas wait for restitution of their funds . . . and the American public waits for justice.
But this story is passe and it is time to turn the page, correct? On to the 2012 campaign. The war on women. The debate over private equity. Who’s married to whom? Folks, those topics may be worthy of debate, BUT they are sideshows as the theft and destruction of our trust, integrity, and confidence continues. (more…)
Jalen Rose Leadership Academy: The Model for Urban Education
Posted by Larry Doyle on December 31st, 2011 12:37 PM |
I am passionate about a number of things, including integrity, accountability, discipline, fairness, and opportunity.
I am not bashful in calling out those people whom I believe willingly and wantonly flout these virtues.
I also welcome heaping praise on those who not only embrace these virtues but then also go about doing something to promote them.
I typically immediately place these real American heroes into the Sense on Cents Hall of Fame. On that note and on this the final day of 2011, I welcome inducting Mr. Jalen Rose into our hallowed hall of heroes. (more…)
