The Federal Reserve Comes Clean

Posted by Larry Doyle on August 10th, 2011 5:47 AM |

Federal Reserve System imagesHave you ever officially read a Federal Reserve statement?

Many market participants rip apart Fed statements within seconds of release looking for key words or phrases to decipher the path of future Fed policy.

Often reading a Fed statement is like reading a Tarot card as the ‘great and all powerful Fed’ provides sufficient obfuscation in order to cover a whole slew of bases.

Yesterday’s Federal Reserve statement struck me as far different from those in the past as it left very little to interpretation. (more…)

Startling Statistics Speak Volumes

Posted by Larry Doyle on July 27th, 2010 1:05 PM |

Thanks to a good friend of Sense on Cents for sharing an array of truly startling statistics about the distribution of wealth in our nation today. These stats are embedded in a recent article which ran at Yahoo Finance entitled, The Middle Class in America Is Radically Shrinking. Let’s review the statistics first and add comments later:

•    83 percent of all U.S. stocks are in the hands of 1 percent of the people.
•    61 percent of Americans “always or usually” live paycheck to paycheck, which was up from 49 percent in 2008 and 43 percent in 2007.
•    66 percent of the income growth between 2001 and 2007 went to the top 1% of all Americans. (more…)

Bruce Malkenhorst Should Thank Robert Rizzo

Posted by Larry Doyle on July 24th, 2010 10:15 AM |

Bruce Malkenhorst must be a very happy man today and for that he should thank Robert Rizzo.

Who is Malkenhorst? Who is Rizzo? What is the story here?

Readers may recall that 14 months ago, Malkenhorst, a former municipal employee in Vernon, CA was exposed as the recipient of a sweet little ‘half million dollar pension’ connected to his duties in the bustling metropolis of Vernon, CA. How bustling? Vernon, a community in southern California, has a total population of approximately 100 citizens.

Malkenhorst and his cronies in Vernon singlehandedly redefined the concept of municipal fiscal abuse. I highlighted this story and accompanying unbelievable details a year ago in writing a story which an inordinate number of readers have reviewed entitled California’s $100, 000 Club.

This week, Malkenhorst and his pals in Vernon must have partied real hard and toasted Robert Rizzo all week long. Why is that? (more…)

Sense on Cents Goes Back to School

Posted by Larry Doyle on January 31st, 2010 10:40 AM |

One of my goals at Sense on Cents is to leverage my Wall Street background and experience to help those currently in school gain a greater understanding of the markets and the economy. In addition, I have always garnered great satisfaction in providing mentoring and career advice to students at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.

Why do I raise this topic now? Maybe it is the economy, maybe it is the growth of Sense on Cents, but I have also been receiving positive feedback from people coming to the site from colleges and universities around the country. I am quite pleased by this development and I sincerely hope that students utilize my Career Planning link. The material there has received rave reviews.

Financial Primers (right sidebar), links to Economic All-Stars (left sidebar), and the extensive library that has been created from my writing provides a trove of information for students and others who are interested in more effectively navigating the economic landscape.

For those students visiting Sense on Cents regularly, please share the site with your friends. Please also know that I am always open to presentations and/or conference calls to groups.

If you do not immediately find what you are looking for, do not hesitate to ask.

Collectively, we can all help each other succeed during these challenging times.

Class dismissed.
