Love him or hate him, Jack Welch did America a real public service last Friday. With his tweet minutes after the release of the seemingly incredulous employment report, Welch embraced a virtue long ago appreciated but now too easily dismissed, especially by those within the media.
What virtue is this?
QUESTION AUTHORITY!!
Some may think Welch was more making a statement rather than posing a question. I would view that as a matter of semantics. (more…)

I had initially planned on writing today about a story of how the SEC is employing what could only be described as thuggery and intimidation tactics against a small credit ratings firm that has dared to pursue the truth.
The thought also crossed my mind of addressing a long overdue suit against another of Wall Street’s giants for propagating fraud within the mortgage origination business. Are the regulators and prosecutors aware it is almost 2013 and that they are years late in pursuing justice on this front?
Why is it that when I think about both of these fiascoes and so much more, I feel that the powers that be in Washington and New York attempt to foist upon us a reality that could only be equated to The Twilight Zone. The lies, the perversions, and the daily stream of garbage that emanate from the political and financial power bases can be overwhelming if we were actually to give it a degree of credibility. The lack of credibility ship and the losers aboard it sailed a LONG time ago. (more…)

Our nation has endured a lot of hits over the last weeks, months, and years. Despite these hits — and the accompanying shortcomings of many whom we might deem to be our leaders but partake in various iterations of crony capitalism — our nation remains the land of the free and the home of the brave.
Having not often taken a break from the standard delivery of this blog, I welcome doing just that right now. Why? The rendition of our national anthem highlighted below truly inspired me. I would like to pass that inspiration along. (more…)

There is nothing inherently wrong with borrowing money. Taking out a loan to fund a business, buy a house, pay for education are all worthwhile endeavors for individuals and a nation alike. This said, there comes a point where imprudent borrowing and lending run the risk of fiscal calamity. That segment of our economic landscape is a distant memory in our nation’s rear view mirror.
My 8th grade son is mesmerized by the Debt Clock in the left hand sidebar here at Sense on Cents adding ~$5,000/second to our national debt. He asks me how our debt could have gotten so high and so out of control. For his benefit and that of others, I welcome providing another view of our nation’s past and projected fiscal deficit. Was the unemployment report released this morning gamed by the powers that be in Washington? Former General Electric CEO Jack Welch thinks so and had this to say in a tweet released right after the report:

Well, while Welch and many others believe a conspiracy is at work, let’s take a harder look at the numbers.

Reeling from a widely acknowledged trouncing in the first debate, President Obama had this to say while on the stump yesterday:
“. . . if you want to be president you owe the American people the truth.”
Is that right? Why do visions of Susan Rice boldly lying to America regarding the recent terrorist attack in Libya dance through my mind?
I will allow others to weigh in on how much truth emanates from the White House and Capitol Hill. Regular readers are well aware of my trumpeting for truth, transparency, and integrity from ALL of our elected officials and everybody else. The president’s call for veracity compels me to highlight one of the most widely commented reviews ever run here at Sense on Cents.

With the 2012 campaign entering the home stretch and the first Presidential debate now in the record books, I would welcome hearing from readers what they think at this critical juncture in our nation’s history.
Did last night’s debate change your opinion of either Republican nominee Mitt Romney or President Barack Obama?
Did you learn anything new last evening? Are there issues you would like to see further explored? How about the manner in which the respective campaigns have been managed and/or covered relative to what we saw displayed last evening?
The floor is wide open. I hope supporters of both candidates may offer opinions. Additionally, I would welcome hearing from voters who remain undecided.
What do readers think? Please do not be bashful.

Despite a wealth of political bluster that Wall Street has been reformed, we awake this morning to see that very little has really changed on this front. Financial regulatory reform? Not today, folks.
The simple fact is when it comes to Wall Street regulation, investors, consumers, and the American public at large are being fed the same helping of dog$hit.
We need look no further than a meeting held just yesterday of industry executives and securities regulators to see exactly this. (more…)

Is yesterday’s announcement that the New York Attorney General (on behalf of the President’s Residential Mortgage-Backed Securities working group) is suing JP Morgan for fraud in selling mortgage-backed securities during 2006 and 2007 America’s long overdue call for justice?
Here is a copy of the suit. A few comments and questions.
First off, the activity in question occurred at Bear Stearns and not JP Morgan. JPM purchased Bear in the spring of 2008. I have long believed that selected parts of the mortgage origination process on Wall Street rose to the level of a racketeering enterprise. (more…)

Given the strong and varied response to a few of my most recent commentaries, I thought it may be insightful to take a look back into the archives. In September 2011, I took a bit of a sabbatical from writing. I would like to rerun the first post back from that break which ran in early October 2011. Has anything really changed from where we were a year ago this week? I think not.
In fact, I think the issues our nation has in finding, embracing, and revealing the truth are now more troubling than ever. What does that say about us as a people and a society? One reader the other day equated us to mushrooms being “fed manure and kept in the dark.” With no desire to sit idly by being fed a daily dose of dung, I welcome the challenge of continuing to pursue the truth as we navigate the economic landscape. Information is everything.
Access to information combined with fair and open markets are cornerstones of our free market capitalist system. With our economy continuing to lag, I have witnessed an increase in the stifling of the truth. (more…)
