NoQuarter Radio’s “Sense on Cents with Larry Doyle”

In 30 Minutes, Join No Quarter Radio’s “Sense on Cents with Larry Doyle”

Posted by Larry Doyle on March 22nd, 2009 7:30 PM |

Join me from 8:00 to 9:00 p.m. ET on No Quarter Radio for Sense on Cents with Larry Doyle. These are truly historic times in the global economy. Let’s “navigate the economic landscape” without the pandering or nonsense found elsewhere! With the stock market near 12 year lows, what is driving the flows? What is truly going on in the economy? Where are markets headed? What is happening in Washington and how is that impacting Wall Street? So much to cover.

Tonight I will talk with Chuck Doyle of Business Capital in San Francisco. Chuck is one of the leading professionals in the field of debt restructuring and recapitalization, and he has been highlighted regularly in major media outlets including The Wall Street Journal and CNN. In the midst of our current economic turmoil, this conversation will be both timely and enlightening.

The developments in the markets, economy, global finance, Wall Street, and Washington are occurring at breakneck speed. I will try to slow things down a bit and provide a sense of perspective. What did we learn in the markets over the last week and month and what do they mean for the weeks and months ahead? What is happening overseas and how does that impact us here at home? What is happening in the municipal sector and how will that impact the markets and our personal finances?

Telling It Like It Is

Posted by Larry Doyle on March 20th, 2009 5:32 PM |

I am neither a Democrat, nor a Republican. Amidst all the pandering and nonsense, I think it is beneficial to get a clear review and hear someone tell it like it is. Rep. Thaddeus McCotter (R-Michigan) does a very good job.

Shame on everyone involved in Washington for a poorly written Stimulus Bill, and an equally poor legislative process.

Friends Like This…Who Needs Enemies

Posted by Larry Doyle on March 19th, 2009 12:36 PM |

Senator Dodd did not exactly fall on the sword for the Obama administration as Bloomberg reports, Senator Chris Dodd Blames Obama Administration for Bonus Amendment.

The very legislators who rushed through the Stimulus Bill, which included provisions to prevent AIG-like bonuses, are now railing and pandering as never before.  Who are these politicians? Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Barney Frank, Chuck Schumer, and many more. Treasury Secretary Geithner Vows to Recoup AIG Bonuses as Lawmakers Express Fury.  Geithner himself feigned ignorance of his knowledge of these AIG payouts.

What do we learn from this sort of political circus? (more…)

Let’s Meet David Darst

Posted by Larry Doyle on March 14th, 2009 6:00 PM |

David Darst may not be a household name for the general public, but for those involved in the world of finance he is held in very high regard. In fact, I think so highly of David that in the Sense on Cents Reading Room, I included his book:

The Complete Bond Book: A Guide to All Types of Fixed-Income Securities
by David Darst
– the Wall Street insider’s Bible to all types of fixed income securities.

David was interviewed yesterday on Bloomberg News. He touches on issues I have recently addressed here at Sense on Cents. I appreciated his commentary on the fact that the equity market rally this week was a “psychological” bounce in the context of a bear market. I addressed the particulars of the current market psychology in my piece, Is the Market Oversold? UPDATE.

Darst also offers enlightening color on overall market outlook, inflation, and places to hide amidst this turmoil.  I know you will not be disappointed in viewing Morgan Stanley’s Darst Sees Psychology Driving Stocks. It’s a 5 minute clip from a man with a lifetime of experience!! I am happy to bring it to you as we collectively navigate the economic landscape.

The Truth May Hurt…

Posted by Larry Doyle on March 10th, 2009 11:19 AM |

I very much appreciate reading material written by people whom I perceive as having no agenda. I have tried to bring people like this (including Ray Dalio, Paul Keating, Bob Rodriguez, Steve Rehm, Kevin Doyle, Vaclav Klaus, and many others) to Sense on Cents because I firmly believe we all become more educated and informed in the process. Please let me know if and when you perceive me, any of the pieces to which I link, or radio guests on NQR’s Sense on Cents as not dealing totally in the truth. Constructive criticism is always appreciated and will make for a better site.

Along with the aformentioned, I have also previously remarked on my high regard for John Mauldin, one of our Economic All-Stars. John himself possesses an insightful global perspective and has a circle of friends and confidantes that are simply off the charts.

In John’s weekly Outside the Box, he shares with us the perceptions of Michael E. Lewitt. Mr. Lewitt writes at length on topics we have covered here previously, but his level of detail and thoughtful analysis are well worth the read.

Topics covered include: (more…)

Keating Undresses Geithner

Posted by Larry Doyle on March 9th, 2009 12:37 PM |

One of the few countries in the world to escape the worst of this economic tsunami is Australia. I introduced you to former Australian Prime Minister and Treasurer Paul Keating on February 18th in my piece entitled A Fresh and Honest Perspective. Keating was brutally honest in the video clip (thank you SR for providing it!!) included in that article .

I love an honest man!!

Former Australian Prime Minister and Treasurer Paul Keating

Well, Mr. Keating has spoken again and I am listening to him very closely as I strongly believe I am more educated and informed as a result. Our domestic officials and media outlets should take heed.

In an article published in this past Saturday’s Sydney Morning Herald, Obama’s Economic Saviour Savaged as Keating Let’s Rip.  Keating offers a piercing review of then Treasury Officer Geithner’s structuring of an IMF led rescue plan of the Southeast Asian crisis in 1997-98. For those unaware, many countries in SE Asia had massive infusions of foreign capital in the form of debt to facilitate infrastructure development. Geithner and then IMF Chief Michael Camdessus structured a plan that injected $200 billion dollars in the form of IMF loans to refloat the economy. Keating maintains that Geithner and Camdessus totally misdiagnosed the problem and in turn the solution.   (more…)

FROM THE ARCHIVES: The Wall Street Model Is Broken…and Won’t Soon Be Fixed!!

Posted by Larry Doyle on March 5th, 2009 6:37 PM |

Some of my favorite movies are The Sting, Rocky, and Papillon.  I could watch those films a few times a year and appreciate the plot, character development, and climax.

In that same vein, for newer readers here at Sense on Cents, I want to highlight a piece I wrote on November 12, 2008.  I believe this piece is as clear cut an historical explanation as I have seen to highlight the background of the debacle on Wall Street which precipitated this economic disaster. I also find it interesting as to my comments about potential market reaction to an aggressive tax/spend program under President Obama and a Democratic Congress.

I hope you find this article informative and enlightening: (more…)

Control Your Finances

Posted by Larry Doyle on March 2nd, 2009 7:43 PM |

For those who have been tracking my work for the last few months, you have heard me repeat the theme, “control your finances, so that your finances do not control you.”  Effectively, I am trying to address the financial disciplines that are less a series of individual transactions and more a way of life.

These disciplines are more easily formed at the earliest stages of one’s financial life and then reinforced throughout life. On that note, this piece is primarily targeted to our younger readers, although it certainly has applications for everybody.

Our social customs have relegated the virtue of thrift to the back burner. In the process, our massive debt burdens are crippling us. Well, let’s move that virtue of thrift front and center and get very specific on this topic. Sense on Cents provides a link to a great investing primer (found in the right sidebar). There’s a wealth of information included in the link, but for now check out  Eight Financial Tips for Young Adults .

While reading the playbook is a good start, ultimately winning the game is all about execution. These plays may not be the answer to all your financial issues, but they are certainly a solid start in controlling your finances, so they do not control you!!
