Thanksgiving 2010: Reasons to Be Thankful

Posted by Larry Doyle on November 25th, 2010 6:34 AM |

As I sit here in the early morning hours, I pause and reflect on the past year. I have so much for which to be grateful.

While my wife would not want me to bring attention to her, I am not only exceptionally grateful but extremely fortunate to be married to the most beautiful girl in the world. Thank you my love!! I am also not reticent in stating that Sense on Cents would not be what it is without my beloved’s wisdom and technical support.

To my four beautiful children, I am not typically challenged to express my feelings. I have untold love and admiration for what you have accomplished and more importantly for who you are. We all know your own gratitude should be directed to your mother. (more…)

Greek ‘Drama’ Only in First Act, or ‘Beware of Greeks Bearing Gifts’

Posted by Larry Doyle on April 6th, 2010 1:42 PM |

Prior reports that Greece’s financial problems are now in the rear view mirror are exceedingly premature.

As we navigate ‘across the pond,’ we learn that the Financial Times’ Wolfgang Munchau believes Greece Is Going to Default but Not This Year:

Greece will not only have to make an extremely large public sector deficit reduction effort but it will also have to do this under a condition of disinflation, and possibly deflation, which would push its nominal growth rate to negative levels during the adjustment period. That, in turn, would jeopardise the debt reduction programme of both the public and private sectors. Under those circumstances, there is no way that Greece could ever stabilise its debt-to-gross domestic product ratio, no matter how hard the government of George Papandreou tries.

To get out of this mess, one of five things will have to happen. (more…)

A Boston Irishman’s Perspective on the Kennedys

Posted by Larry Doyle on January 19th, 2010 3:10 PM |

Maintaining our theme for the day of Massachusetts politics, I feel compelled to address my thoughts and perspectives on the Kennedy legacy.

When I moved to New York in the early ’80s after having graduated from Holy Cross, I was struck by how many people instinctively viewed my Boston Irish Catholic upbringing as being supportive of the Kennedy royalty. Time and again, people assumed that this Irishman from Boston must have been a big supporter of the Kennedy political dynasty. I would typically refrain from commenting and get back to trading bonds.

At one point, though, I distinctly recall telling a colleague that I had anything but respect for the Kennedys. He was flabbergasted. (more…)

Weekend Reading Roundup: ‘Sure Looks Good on the Outside’

Posted by Larry Doyle on August 15th, 2009 9:33 AM |

“Sure looks good on the outside, but my lips are sealed.”

The things a 15-year old kid remembers. I distinctly recall a number of graduating students at Boston Latin School in the mid- 1970s utilizing this phrase to describe their high school experience.

In so many words, those graduates were saying their Boston Latin School experience was not as it may have appeared.

Could the same be said for some of the games being played in Washington and on Wall Street? In an attempt to ‘unseal the lips and get people talking,’ I submit the following recommended reading.

My lips are most definitely NOT sealed!!
