Aside from my hope that readers would care enough to share my writing and passion for the Sense on Cents virtues of truth, transparency, and integrity I do not believe I ask for much if anything from those who come here.
Well, today I am asking.
How might you help?
More than you may ever fully know or appreciate. (more…)

“What they call ‘unlawful commingling’ on Wall Street is called ‘stealing’ back on Main Street.”
A week ago, I welcomed highlighting the plight of an elderly couple ensnared in the morass that is the MF Global debacle. Helen Metchikoff’s plea tugged at my heart as she wrote:
i am a 75 yr old grandmother my husband is 76 we take care of a brain injured 55 yr old son all of our investment money we saved in our lifetimes was invested in mf global for a monthly income to live out our lives now we are broke living on a pittance social security checks this is such a crime against all the people who lost through the greed of corzine and all the rest of his cronies isn’t there anything that can be done to help us we are suffering and i don’t think we deserve this they should all be punished severely for this just like madoff is…
There are clearly many, many more individuals and couples also suffering as a result of the “commingling” that transpired at MF Global. Yesterday, I read of just such another individual.

Hot off the press, I just received the Duke University/CFO Magazine Global Business Outlook Survey. The survey highlights reasons for real optimism domestically but with ongoing concerns and risks as well. Let’s dispense with the formalities and dive right in to the voluminous amount of detail within this cutting edge and timely release.
Where else are you getting this sort of real time insight?
Let’s navigate.
DURHAM, N.C. — Optimism among U.S. and Asian chief financial officers jumped this quarter and the hiring outlook is strong for 2012. European CFOs also say 2012 will be an improvement over a difficult 2011. >>>>>>>> (more…)

Wall Street may think it is back to business as usual, but what about those investors and our fellow American citizens who were left behind and forgotten as a result of the crisis from 2008? Of whom do I speak?
The tens of thousands of our fellow citizens who remain hostage in the ARS Roach Motels.
Who are the managers of seemingly the most grotesque ARS Roach Motels? Oppenheimer Holdings and Pimco. How do we know? (more…)

Shhhhhhhh………
What is that eerie silence emanating from Wall Street lately? No, it’s not the quiet on the floors of the equity exchanges in the midst of anemic trading volumes. It is also not the empty echoes emanating from trading desks once bursting with activity.
The eerie silence to which I allude goes to the price fixing at the very core of how our Wall Street banks fund themselves in the overnight market. Sounds ominous, no? Let’s navigate and enter the world of Libor based funding. What is Libor? ……………….. (more…)

All too often I have heard over the last few years from investors violated by the Wall Street-Washington incestuous process and feeling totally disenfranchised as a result. Why have investors gotten trampled?
Great question and worthy of widespread debate and discussion. In an attempt to narrow our focus today, let’s zero in on the Securities Investor Protection Corporation, the organization designed to:
restoring funds to investors with assets in the hands of bankrupt and otherwise financially troubled brokerage firms. The Securities Investor Protection Corporation was not chartered by Congress to combat fraud.
From where does SIPC raise its funds in order to offer this protection to investors? (more…)

It’s the weekend, so let’s take a breather from our normal navigation of the economic landscape.
Not that the twists and turns on our economic landscape are not challenging enough but let’s navigate a much steeper slope. How about if we ‘join’ a very special mission and climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Really?
Yes, really. Please stick with me on this. You will not be disappointed. In fact, you will be amazed.
A close friend of mine recently returned from ascending the highest peak in Africa with a group known as Mission Kilimanjaro. What made this undertaking so special, and why should you read this story and view the embedded video at the end of my commentary? (more…)

While most people see the trees, the waves, and the stars, there are a few money managers and economists out there who see and speak truly about the forest, the oceans, and the galaxies.
Who are a few of these individuals?
Jeremy Grantham of Grantham Mayo, whom I highlighted a week ago. Bob Rodriguez of First Pacific Advisors of whom I have written often. Harvard economist Kenneth Rogoff is without peer in understanding and delivering on the depth and breadth of our global economic crisis. I personally think the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy’s Amar Bhide is in a class with only Simon Johnson in addressing what the world of finance needs to do in correcting itself circa 2012.
Who else also occupies the loftiest of spots in the Sense on Cents Hall of Fame and distinguishes himself along with these other luminaries?

Writing down sovereign debt by over 50% and subordinating one class of bondholders from another –those being the royalty ensconced within the European Central Bank — would not qualify as a “credit” event, now would it? No way! Of course not! Why would it?!
Not when those compelled to pay out on the supposed “insurance” within derivative contracts are the royalty within other large international banks, and they sit in the positions of judge, jury, and counterparty in the case.
Welcome to the world of international finance circa 2012. (more…)

“LD, have you gone mad??”
“I thought Sense on Cents was a blog to navigate the economic landscape?”
Relax, folks. I have not gone mad and Sense on Cents is not changing its primary goals of promoting investor education and investor protection.
That said, I am compelled to digress in this one commentary given some recent messages I have received in response to a commentary run at the Huffington Post written by a Larry Doyle entitled The Jesus-Eating Cult of Rick Santorum.
Doyle spews forth some truly vile comments which do little to promote a sense of decency in our nation. (more…)
