Judge Jed Rakoff’s Ruling on Unsealing FINRA Documents…

Posted by Larry Doyle on January 20th, 2010 10:09 AM |

…will be delivered by February 15th.

Will America ever learn if current SEC Chair and former FINRA head Mary Schapiro and fellow FINRA executives lied verbally and in a proxy statement regarding the merger of NYSE Regulation and the NASD to form FINRA?

Having attended hearings on this case (Standard Investment Chartered v FINRA) in Judge Jed Rakoff’s chambers in October and been informed of further deliberations in December, I was hopeful last Thursday that Rakoff would order the details of pertinent FINRA documents to be made public. Recall that The New York Times, Dow Jones, Bloomberg, and Sense on Cents have all requested the release of these documents.

I was back in Judge Rakoff’s chambers last Thursday. (more…)

Will Cage Fighting Save New York?

Posted by Larry Doyle on January 20th, 2010 8:00 AM |

How low can we go?

Desperate times certainly require desperate measures, but just how low will America sink in an attempt to address its massive fiscal deficits and budgetary pressures? Well, it would appear that New York State is ready to sink pretty low. New York Governor David Paterson released his proposed budget yesterday. WCBS TV in New York provides a comprehensive summary in reporting, Paterson: Budget Has $1 Billion in New Taxes. Let’s navigate.

Governor David Paterson said Tuesday that the days of profligate spending in Albany are over and that starting immediately lawmakers must participate in an “age of accountability.” (more…)

Why Scott Brown Won

Posted by Larry Doyle on January 19th, 2010 9:22 PM |

Editor’s note: Martha Coakley just conceded. Earlier today, LD wrote “Why Scott Brown Will Win Today.”  Given the Coakley concession, LD’s original commentary has been slightly adapted and is being reposted  for newer readers to gain his thoughts and insights on this historic, political upset.

*****************

Of all the seats in all the states, who would have ever thought that the U.S. Senate seat held by Teddy Kennedy would change the course of our national debate and direction. Why did Scott Brown win today? What did the voters of Massachusetts say?

Political pundits and the media establishment are trying to pin the Democratic loss on the piss-poor campaign run by Martha Coakley. In doing so, they are once again displaying that they are tone deaf and out of step with America.

Over the last year, I have seen and felt our nation get wise to the stench in Washington and on Wall Street. As such, a poorly run Coakley campaign was the least of the factors impacting the race in Massachusetts today. The electorate in the Bay State was unbelievably energized and, in my opinion, delivered Scott Brown and a strong message to Washington for the following reasons: (more…)

Steve Walker Addresses Washington’s SOBs

Posted by Larry Doyle on January 19th, 2010 5:46 PM |

With the surge of Scott Brown in the MA Senate race, the Democrats are licking their wounds. The Republicans will likely parade in splendor. The fact is both political crowds are increasingly out of touch with America. Washington is much more the problem than the solution.

The Wall Street Journal provides insights on this burgeoning development in writing, Republican Rise. This title is actually a bit of a misnomer. While the Republicans may be benefiting from recent developments, the fact is America in general and independent voters specifically have cast a pox on both political houses. Who gets this? Steve Walker. Who is Steve Walker? Let’s revisit the WSJ article: (more…)

A Boston Irishman’s Perspective on the Kennedys

Posted by Larry Doyle on January 19th, 2010 3:10 PM |

Maintaining our theme for the day of Massachusetts politics, I feel compelled to address my thoughts and perspectives on the Kennedy legacy.

When I moved to New York in the early ’80s after having graduated from Holy Cross, I was struck by how many people instinctively viewed my Boston Irish Catholic upbringing as being supportive of the Kennedy royalty. Time and again, people assumed that this Irishman from Boston must have been a big supporter of the Kennedy political dynasty. I would typically refrain from commenting and get back to trading bonds.

At one point, though, I distinctly recall telling a colleague that I had anything but respect for the Kennedys. He was flabbergasted. (more…)

How Might Washington Respond to a Brown Victory?

Posted by Larry Doyle on January 19th, 2010 12:39 PM |

Sense on Cents is not becoming a purely political site.

As we navigate the landscape of our Uncle Sam economy, though, more and more of the twists and turns in our road are impacted by developments in Washington. Given that reality, how will Washington respond if in fact Republican Scott Brown is victorious today in the MA Senate race.

The immediate question is how the administration will address the issue of healthcare reform. Will Obama try to ram this legislation through via the process known as reconciliation? Will the administration try to fast track the Senate’s version of healthcare reform? Will the blue-dog Democrats stand by the administration on healthcare reform and risk the wrath of their electorate back home? Ed Schultz: Immediate Induction into Sense on Cents Hall of Shame

Posted by Larry Doyle on January 18th, 2010 12:30 PM |

With this post, I am immediately inducting Ed Schultz, TV host on MSNBC, into the Sense on Cents Hall of Shame. Why? What could Ed Schultz have done to deserve this “honor?”

The pursuit of truth, transparency, and integrity on our economic landscape is forever challenging. The true challenge of this pursuit is the length to which many people will go to disguise and bury these virtues. Much of my writing is dedicated to uncovering these virtues amidst the degradation so prevalent in our country.

Ed Schultz’s transgression requires no work on my part or anybody else. Schultz takes journalistic integrity to a new low in espousing the fact that he would cheat to keep Scott Brown from winning tomorrow’s Massachusetts Senate runoff election:

You can’t make this stuff up. Schultz is clearly trying to drive ratings and create shock value with his statement. That said, is it any wonder why Americans with at least some degree of intelligence are running away from the mainstream media that propagates this sort of garbage?

I am sure Scott Brown hopes Ed Schultz and Patrick Kennedy (see prior post) are both back on the stump today. Nitwits such as these are only serving to steel the fortitude of Americans who are sickened by the lack of intelligence and real character prevalent on our economic and political landscape.

Schultz – like Kennedy – removes all doubt as to how stupid he truly is. Ed Schultz, just another jackass brought to us by the liberal mainstream media.

How Stupid Is Patrick Kennedy (D-RI)?

Posted by Larry Doyle on January 18th, 2010 8:26 AM |

It is better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.

This long held quote could be attached to many political nitwits over the years. Will there ever be a more classic example of political ineptitude than that delivered yesterday by Congressman Patrick Kennedy (D-RI) in support of the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in Massachusetts, Martha Coakley?

For those who missed it, Kennedy spoke yesterday at a political rally for the Massachusetts Democrat. After the rally in speaking with reporters, Kennedy continually identified the Democratic candidate as ‘Marcia’ Coakley.

Kennedy’s gaffe is galling on a number of fronts, including: (more…)
