How Stupid Is Patrick Kennedy (D-RI)?

Posted by Larry Doyle on January 18, 2010 8:26 AM |

It is better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.

This long held quote could be attached to many political nitwits over the years. Will there ever be a more classic example of political ineptitude than that delivered yesterday by Congressman Patrick Kennedy (D-RI) in support of the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in Massachusetts, Martha Coakley?

For those who missed it, Kennedy spoke yesterday at a political rally for the Massachusetts Democrat. After the rally in speaking with reporters, Kennedy continually identified the Democratic candidate as ‘Marcia’ Coakley.

Kennedy’s gaffe is galling on a number of fronts, including:

1. He repeated it a number of times.

2. He is not some distant Democrat throwing in his two cents for a sound bite. This special election is to fill the seat his father held for 46 years. Patrick Kennedy serves the citizens of neighboring Rhode Island.

3. In my opinion, Kennedy’s gaffe displays a combination of lack of intelligence, a dose of arrogance, and pure political pandering.

People do make mistakes. Honest mistakes are one thing. Mispronouncing an individual’s name in passing is understandable. Continually mispronouncing Coakley’s name begs the question as to how out of touch Patrick Kennedy truly is.

I have to believe Scott Brown hopes Kennedy is back out on the stump for ‘Marcia’ Coakley again today.

By questioning Kennedy’s intellect and arrogance, I do not profess to think that there aren’t representatives from the other side of the aisle who are not equally dense. My main point of this commentary is to highlight the fact that Washington has far too many representatives who, generally speaking, are not all that intelligent. Patrick Kennedy, a career politician, is just one of them.

Somewhere, Barack is shaking his head and feeling an urge in to do some smacking!!

To make this situation even better, when introducing Senator John Kerry, Obama forgot what state he was in. This is no exaggeration. He hesitated for several seconds clearly trying to remember what state Kerry was from (um, the state where you are?), then stated “Massachusetts, yeah, we all know where we are!” It is simply incredible. One could not craft this any better/worse depending on your perspective.

Wow. I had not seen nor heard that. Seems fairly obvious that Obama has a difficult time in making impromptu remarks out on the stump. Put it on the teleprompter and he is smooth as silk. With all due respect to the office, a President totally dependent on a teleprompter does not inspire confidence. Thanks for sharing that tidbit.

Also… consider an “Edit Post” addition.

I am guessing you are referring to the technical capabilities here at the site. I have seen “Edit” links in the comments sections at other sites.

Is this what you are referring to?

      • Mike

There’s plenty of message boards that give you the option to edit or delete posts you make. It would be nice for my mistype above.

Funny you raise this topic. I have considered adding that capability, but my gut tells me not to as people would have to register and provide personal info.

That would be a nice problem to have when Sense on Cents sweeps America but we’re not there yet.

If his name were Patrick Smith, with no connection to the “royalty”, what do you think he’d be doing for a living?

    • JD

If his name were Smith he’d probably be on Marsha Coakley’s payroll.

I just watched the segment on The Colbert Report with him and this PROJECT SAM thing and couldn’t believe my ears. He basically reinforced the idea that pot if actually addicting and life ruining, and then said he used to be a coke and Oxycotin addict.

This “project sam” thing is supposed to be a smarter alternative use for mari…i can’t spell it, POT. He talked about brain cancer and mental illnesses and is opposed to making pot legal despite pot can help with cancer pain and other things.

    I just was…”what?!” watching that…total idiot.
