Can you imagine the lengths our nation would go to address and eradicate a social situation correlated very highly with activities (including juvenile murder and rape) that land people in prison?
Can you further imagine the outcry to address this social situation if it were also highly correlated with an increased risk of suicide?
What if over and above those high correlations, this social situation was also very highly correlated with children dropping out of school? Clearly the public outcry would be earth shattering and the march on Washington would be historic in nature, no? (more…)

First Pacific Advisor’s Bob Rodriguez is a renowned money manager. I hold him in the highest regard.
The only issue I have in regard to Mr. Rodriguez is that he is not in Washington managing our nation’s fiscal policy.
The simple fact is Rodriguez knows of what he talks and relates it in language that is foreign to most politicians, that is, plain English.
With the ongoing budget fiasco, debt ceiling, and accompanying fiscal cliff on our horizon at year end, recent comments by Rodriguez should ring long, loud, and clear throughout Washington. (more…)

What issue in our nation generates the strongest personal reaction?
1. Economy
2. Education
3. Deficit
4. Healthcare
5. Employment
While my poll is entirely unscientific and my answer is my own opinion, I STRONGLY believe that the topic of healthcare generates the strongest reaction of any issue facing our nation. Why? It’s personal nature, that is, “if you do not have your health, then what else really matters”? (more…)

This story is a tad long, but it is chock-filled with a wealth of twists, turns, personalities, politicians, and much more. I strongly recommend.
Politics is clearly a contact sport. No doubt not all of the punches are above the belt.
I first referenced the Obama White House use of intimidation in the case of Tom Lauria, then lawyer for a group of Chrysler creditors. I wrote in early May 2009, Is Barack Obama Going Tony Soprano? How uncanny that the same reference is utilized today in an article centered on the impact of ObamaCare and the pending sale of three Scranton-area Catholic hospitals. American Spectator writes in regard to ObamaCare:
….the White House is confronted with a rapidly accelerating set of unintended consequences spreading across the country. As listed by theWall Street Journal, those unintended consequences included 2011 premium increases shooting up as high as 9%; “multibillion-dollar corporate writedowns by Verizon, AT&T, Caterpillar and others”; the disruption of insurance markets, a show-down with McDonald’s, the imposition of price controls on premiums, insurers withdrawing from Medicare Advantage.
In what appears to have become a pattern, the response from the Obama Administration has been repeatedly swift and harsh –compared by one critic as an episode straight out of the Sopranos, the famous HBO mobster series. (more…)

Our economy is experiencing disinflation and trending towards deflation, right? Well, it looks like the health insurance industry did not get that memo. If rates do go up, they can’t be more than a few percent, right? Wrong!!
Although this issue is not getting the attention it deserves, once again those footing the bills in our nation are getting bent over. In my home state, a recent story highlighted Health Insurers Seeking Rate Hikes of More Than 20 Per Cent in Connecticut:
Health insurers are asking for immediate rate hikes of more than 20 percent in Connecticut for some plans, citing rising medical costs and federal health reform laws as reasons.
Both issues — the new federal health care reform and rising medical costs — are significant drivers of the increases, according to filings by insurers with state regulators that were reviewed by The Courant. (more…)
