Chellaney: China’s Stealth Wars
Posted by Larry Doyle on June 6th, 2013 10:03 AM |
President Obama is poised to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping at a secluded estate in California for a two day summit.
Given China’s current enormous economic surplus, it wields ever more power on the world’s stage. As the US is weighed down and held back by the burden of our massive deficits, China is nimbly and strategically utilizing its power and position extensively in its own backyard and beyond. Let’s navigate and take a closer look.
Brahma Chellaney, Professor of Strategic Studies at the New Delhi-based Center for Policy Research, writes at Project Syndicate of China’s Stealth Wars,
NEW DELHI – China is subverting the status quo in the South and East China Seas, on its border with India, and even concerning international riparian flows – all without firing a single shot. (more…)
Madoff on Markopolos: “He Was an Idiot” . . . Really?
Posted by Larry Doyle on June 5th, 2013 1:19 PM |
I try not to write about those who have committed financial crimes and especially after they have been put away.
I figure why should I give a crook or his comments any of my time or any degree of credibility. To that end, I have welcomed highlighting the ineptitude and corruptible behavior of our financial regulators in dealing with financial crooks while staying away from commenting on the crooked scumbags themselves.
Today I take a break from this discipline as perhaps the largest POS of all, that being Bernie Madoff, made a statement that is deserving of a response. What did this slimeball have to say in the midst of a discussion with a reporter from MarketWatch? (more…)
Doubleline/Gundlach: What in the World is Going On?
Posted by Larry Doyle on June 5th, 2013 9:37 AM |
A perennial Sense on Cents All Star and Hall of Fame inductee, Doubleline’s CEO Jeff Gundlach, presented an investment webcast yesterday.
I welcome sharing the slides utilized by the premiere investment manager in the business as he spanned the globe in his presentation dubbed, “What in the World Is Going On?“
Anybody with even a passing interest in understanding what is happening in our global economy will want to take anywhere from 5 minutes to many hours to absorb what can only be described as a treasure trove of invaluable and informative analysis.
Gundlach’s presentation provides an overview of the following and much more:

Key Economic Driver: Disposable Personal Income
Posted by Larry Doyle on June 4th, 2013 10:02 AM |
There are a host of economic statistics that can be and are utilized to measure the health and forward path of our economy. From GDP to employment to housing starts to inflation, all of these stats can offer a gauge as to how steep our economic landscape is and will be.
What do I believe is now the single most important economic piece of data to forecast our economic future? Disposable personal income. Why so? (more…)
Taibbi Further Investigates Furey v SEC
Posted by Larry Doyle on June 3rd, 2013 10:11 AM |
Wouldn’t you like to have been a fly on the wall to witness what really went on — and still goes on — within the offices of the SEC and our other financial regulators?
Oh the stories and tales of woe that one might be able to share. Every now and then, though, one does not need to worry about being a fly because details of internal intrigue make their way out of the commission.
To that end, a few weeks back both Bloomberg’s Bill Cohan and I shed light on the incredible allegations of incompetence, negligence, if not outright corruption within the SEC made by an internal whistleblower Kathleen Furey.
Over the weekend Rolling Stone’s Matt Taibbi provided even greater transparency on the incredible — or in light of what we have learned about the SEC, perhaps not so unbelievable — allegations made by Ms. Furey in her whistleblower complaint. Those familiar with this case may recall that Furey alleged her superiors within the SEC’s New York office maintained that they did not handle cases dealing with investment managers. Incredible? Unbelievable? Maybe not so much.

Please Do Not Text and Drive Video
Posted by Larry Doyle on June 1st, 2013 9:35 AM |
I beg your indulgence as I defer from navigating the economic landscape to address a far more important topic.
I wish there were never a reason for me to be posting this video about texting and driving. That said, a friend of mine lost his son in a tragic accident. That young man’s life does not have to be lost in vain if others gain a real appreciation for the dangers of texting while driving.
Please take two minutes to view this video clip. Please share it with your own children, extended family, friends, neighbors, and colleagues via every available social media link. Do not wait. Please do it now.
You will likely never know the lives you impact, but the more that the pain expressed by my friend is spread, the impact and benefits will be infinite.
Let’s make texting and driving as socially unacceptable as drinking and driving and save lives in the process.
Thank you.
