Instead of Reviewing Sarah Palin’s E-Mail, The Media Should Investigate…
Posted by Larry Doyle on June 11th, 2011 7:12 AM |
I love America.
I love when our nation rises to the occasion to help each other during times of national crisis. I love when people who would prefer to remain anonymous perform real acts of heroism. I am truly grateful to be a citizen of this great land and to have the freedom to pursue fabulous opportunities and to speak my mind while doing so.
While I love our great land, I cringe when I witness those whom I believe are more concerned with pursuing self-promotion than real national interest. I put Donald Trump in this camp.
I cringe when I witness those in public office or the public arena whom I believe lack the decency and integrity to be upstanding model representatives for our children. I put Anthony Weiner, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and David Vitter amongst many more in this camp. (more…)

Oscar Winner Charles Ferguson Rips Wall Street and Washington
Posted by Larry Doyle on February 28th, 2011 5:28 AM |

Charles Ferguson
“Forgive me, I must start by pointing out that three years after our horrific financial crisis caused by financial fraud, not a single financial executive has gone to jail, and that’s wrong.”
With those words last evening, Charles Ferguson, the winner of the Academy Award for Best Documentary for his film Inside Job, did a lot more than merely begin an acceptance speech. Ferguson touched the third rail and made a political statement. But did he really? Really? Not in my opinion. Ferguson spoke the truth.
When did the mere voicing of the truth become political? Perhaps in America 2011 those who speak the truth actually stand out because we hear so little of the prized virtue. That reality is a sad commentary on our society.
I commend Ferguson. Backstage he had even more to say. (more…)

Bloomberg Poll Casts Doubt on Barack and Ben
Posted by Larry Doyle on November 11th, 2010 10:51 AM |
That haze hanging over Washington DC is not the residue of last week’s elections, it is the less than sanguine outlook of investors on the policies and programs being put forth by President Barack Obama and our lead central banker, Fed chair Ben Bernanke. How hazy? Well, close to two thirds of those polled recently by Bloomberg are pessimistic about Barack’s policies and how they affect the investment climate in the United States. More than three quarters of those polled believe the Fed’s newly launched round of quantitative easing will have little or no benefit on unemployment. Ouch!!
In regard to the greenback, almost seven in ten polled believe the U.S. is deliberately trying to weaken the value of our dollar relative to other currencies. Who else believes this? (more…)

ObamaCare: Is the Obama White House Going “Soprano” Again, or Why Are Three Catholic Scranton, PA Hospitals Being Sold?
Posted by Larry Doyle on October 12th, 2010 6:23 AM |

This story is a tad long, but it is chock-filled with a wealth of twists, turns, personalities, politicians, and much more. I strongly recommend.
Politics is clearly a contact sport. No doubt not all of the punches are above the belt.
I first referenced the Obama White House use of intimidation in the case of Tom Lauria, then lawyer for a group of Chrysler creditors. I wrote in early May 2009, Is Barack Obama Going Tony Soprano? How uncanny that the same reference is utilized today in an article centered on the impact of ObamaCare and the pending sale of three Scranton-area Catholic hospitals. American Spectator writes in regard to ObamaCare:
….the White House is confronted with a rapidly accelerating set of unintended consequences spreading across the country. As listed by theWall Street Journal, those unintended consequences included 2011 premium increases shooting up as high as 9%; “multibillion-dollar corporate writedowns by Verizon, AT&T, Caterpillar and others”; the disruption of insurance markets, a show-down with McDonald’s, the imposition of price controls on premiums, insurers withdrawing from Medicare Advantage.
In what appears to have become a pattern, the response from the Obama Administration has been repeatedly swift and harsh –compared by one critic as an episode straight out of the Sopranos, the famous HBO mobster series. (more…)

Darrel Issa Introduces Legislation to Restore FOIA at the SEC
Posted by Larry Doyle on September 18th, 2010 12:14 PM |
LD’s edit: Thank you to a Sense on Cents reader, Transparency, for informing us that Senate Judiciary Committee Approves Bill To Repeal SEC FOIA Exemptions.
Thanks to a loyal reader of Sense on Cents for sharing this press release put forth earlier this week. Not that the Republican Party does not have a LOT to answer for in terms of the final Financial Regulatory Reform, but at least on this front, I commend Darrell Issa (R-CA) for introducing this legislation.
Issa Introduces the SEC Freedom of Information Restoration Act
President Obama at Signing of Financial Reform Bill: “It demands accountability and responsibility from everyone…It demands accountability and responsibility from everyone…And we all win when folks are rewarded based on how well they perform, not how well they evade accountability.” (more…)

Is Barack Becoming a Lameduck?
Posted by Larry Doyle on September 10th, 2010 8:40 AM |
To know my Dad is to love him.
He wears his heart on his sleeve and is not hesitant to let you know exactly where he stands on the issues of the day. That said, what are his passions? His family above all else. His faith. He has no problem critiquing our Roman Catholic hierarchy while practicing his faith and allegiance to the principles of Christ. Irish history. To hear him talk about the brutal treatment of the Irish at the hands of the English is a lesson worth learning. Red Sox baseball. I will admit my Dad is a fatalist when it comes to our Olde Towne Team but I got my wish that the Sox win a World Series before my Dad passed. The fact that they won twice, 2004 and 2007, is pure gravy. His golf game. Listening to him critique his short game is priceless. Another great passion is politics.
My Dad and his family grew up out of the Depression and political power was everything to the Boston Irish. Gaining control of City Hall provided access to jobs and a path to a better life. While I have my own passions, I do not share my Dad’s passion for politics. Why? As with almost everything in life, politics is about the people. While clearly our political process and political systems are critically important to our current and future well-being, I have little regard for the political crowds in general. Why do I raise this topic? We need look no farther than the state of our nation as we enter the fall 2010 election cycle. Are our national interests truly being served? Let’s navigate further. Sense on Cents Endorses Elizabeth Warren for Consumer Financial Protection Agency
Posted by Larry Doyle on July 17th, 2010 11:20 AM |
Truth, transparency, and integrity!
If our nation is to have any chance to recover from the throes of the worst economic crisis since the 1930s, it had better start elevating and embracing these aforementioned virtues. Time and time again, when we review business practices and political decisions at the center of our crisis, we have seen a glaring lack of these prized virtues. Why and how were these principles compromised? The pursuit of short term profit. Regrettably, this pursuit came at the expense — if not total violation — of these principles. The ultimate long term costs are now being borne by the nation as a whole.
Sense on Cents abhors those who would compromise these core values. Similarly, Sense on Cents embraces those who cherish these values. To that end, I strongly endorse Elizabeth Warren to head the Consumer Financial Protection Agency. (more…)

Barack Obama vs. David Cameron
Posted by Larry Doyle on June 8th, 2010 12:15 PM |
Is Barack Obama listening to the political winds blowing across Europe? With European central bankers turning away from ongoing fiscal stimulus in an attempt to avert a sovereign currency crisis, political leaders in Europe are singing from the same sheet of music. If you don’t think so, let’s listen to the recently elected British Prime Minister David Cameron. What does Cameron have to say? The Financial Times sheds real insights into the future for the UK in writing, Cameron Warns on Impact of Cuts:
David Cameron, Britain’s prime minister, yesterday put the country on notice that his plan to cut the £156bn deficit would have “enormous implications”, warning that public sector pay, pensions and state benefits would all face cuts.
Mr Cameron’s new coalition government has prioritised deficit reduction and is preparing Britain for what is expected to be a bruising “emergency Budget” on June 22. The prime minister said the cuts would hit “every single person in our country”.
What does Barack think about that? (more…)

Indict, Prosecute, Convict the Fraudsters…Or Else!!
Posted by Larry Doyle on June 2nd, 2010 1:20 PM |
Has America lost the courage to aggressively address those who commit fraud? Is the American public even aware of the massive fraud perpetrated by those in our financial system which led to our current economic crisis? Are those in Washington willing to take a stand, risk their own skins, call out those engaged in fraud, even if some of the fraudsters occupy neighboring seats at nearby regulatory bodies?
Unless we find people in our government who are willing to make these calls, repeat them publicly in a long, loud fashion, and compel prosecutors to issue indictments, then I fear our union will pay a price and incur a cost that may be immeasurable.
Why so strong? Why so strident? (more…)

Obama Political Pandering on AZ Immigration Law Represents Real Risk to U.S. Dollar
Posted by Larry Doyle on May 20th, 2010 6:41 AM |
Somebody in Washington might want to pull President Obama aside and inform him that he is the President of the “United States,” not the President of North America or the President of a future Mexican-American Federation. Putting pure party politics aside, when a leader of a nation openly and brazenly turns his back on that nation’s laws and its citizens, sovereign risk increases.
Sense on Cents is not a political site, but developments over the last few days warrant my remarks on how the Obama administration and Obama himself represent increased risk to the value of our dollar and our sovereign integrity. To what do I refer? (more…)
